Did Lightroom Update the XMP File?

You don't need to go to Lightroom.   Headline in in the Metadata tool....

    Thanks Marco for the tip.

As a new C1 user, I'm still in the process of learning how it handles metadata.

I want all metadata stored inside my original images and not in sidecar XMP files which can easily go astray.

I would really appreciate your help if you could tell me the settings required to make C1 write all metadata changes into my original images. I realise that there is a small risk of corrupting the originals but I make regular backups and am comfortable with the risk.

    Regards.

Capture One can write metadata to two places

    • sidecar .xmp files (if you set it to do so in Preferences)
    • its own record of metadata (and other) stuff which is
      - inside the catalog for catalogs
      - in .cos sidecar files for sessions

(It does the second one of these in addition to .xmp files, if you have those set.)

But it will never write it to the original file, which it always leaves completely unaltered.

You can not get what you want with Capture One.  As Ian wrote, Capture One will never write to the original file.   If you use sessions you may be able to use the pack as EIP option to keep things together.  Alas, pack as EIP doesn't work for jpeg, tiff, or the DNG files my scanner produces.

Valid point. You may want to support the Embedded Metadata Manifesto http://embeddedmetadata.org/ (initiative by the IPTC, no less. See the "About us & supporters" page.)

But then C1 will not be your metadata tool.

Thank you all so much for your help.

I will now continue my departure from Adobe Lightroom by using C1 for its excellent image manipulation capabilities and ACDSee for metadata management.

    Cheers.
