    The gear symbol is simply an Icon that indicates to you that the variant has, at some point, been through the Output process.

    For the X's in a circle you need to turn off Composition Mode. It can be found in the "Camera" drop down menu.

    If you use the Community Search facility or the "?" icons in the tools you should find many Help articles in the Support Document database and other resources provided by Capture One.

    The (X) issue is one I have come across a half dozen times, and it's remarkably difficult to search for.  I think OP can be forgiven for not finding this one on their own.  This function should be more easily identified and disabled.

    @NFGphoto.

    As far as I am aware it is not enabled by default and realistically is it quite a specific feature in the Camera menu.

    It does, however, have a Keyboard Shortcut definition available and in past versions there was a Shortcut Key definition provided by default and so it may be possible that it is getting switched on accidentally from time to time - albeit it is not active on the C1 session I have running at the moment.

    With the whole set of knowledge base and user guide documents plus the current and former forum post texts automatically searched  using the Community search tool it is always worth trying a search. Also good to keep it simple and descriptive for things like this.

    So for example for this visible puzzle entering what one sees "6 circles with x" (without the quotation marks) should pull up a few forum posts of old with queries about what they might be.

    The same would the case for many other things that people have stumbled across without knowing what to call them. So a search the describes what has been observed may well produce a match through the search facility.

    I hope this suggestion helps in some way - perhaps on a wider basis than just for this less well known feature!
