"Import Images..." - Enhancement options to improve user experience while importing Images
ImplementedImport dialog provides options - Import From, To, Back Up, Name, Metadata and Adjustment.
Following features can be added to enhance the feature experience.
1. Provision to save different import configurations as User Preset. This will help to save different combinations of source, destination, adjustments and naming rule etc...
2. Need proper IPTC Metadata tool instead of just taking Copyright and Description.
3. Metadata Tool should have save as User Preset option.
4. Provision to apply Color Tag and Rating to Image.

"3. Metadata Tool should have save as User Preset option."
It has that facility.

SFA - Yes, I agree Metadata Tool in Metadata Tool tab has User Preset option.
What I proposing here is to replace current Metadata Tool in Image Import dialog with Metadata Tool which is inside Metadata Tool Tab. Reason is that preset applies "Static" metadata means values are predefined in Metadata Tool of Metadata Tool Tab.. Suppose if you want to create Name and Target folders based on IPTC Tokens it becomes complex. So if IPTC metadata can be updated during import, Target folder and File Names can be based on IPTC data.

If you are apply batch import processing you can pre-define one or more presets or styles for the IPTC data and import in groups.
If you are importing individually according to randomly shot images but using IPTC grouping, then are you thinking about something like the functionality of Photo Mechanic to populate the Metadata prior to using the import process?
There is, of course, the question about whether it would be more effective to pre-prepare images before import (and perhaps before culling?) or simply importing and re-organising into folders (if necessary) after importing.
For example:
You shoot a series of images under with a particular camera setting that will all require the same post processing adjustments but have subjects that need to be grouped separately for some final distributions based on some IPTC data about the subjects.
Is it best to import the images all to the location, apply the common editing requirements and then split them into separate folders? (or just group them using smart albums rather than folders?)
Or would it be better to split them up in folders as part of the import and then "find" them again to share the common processing?
There seems to be a commonly shared opinion amongst many forum members that Photo Mechanic is the tool of choice to satisfy all selection activity and early encoding of metadata.
What could C1 add, pre-import, that would change people's minds?

Yes I agree. Either create multiple preset or import into single folder or use Photo Mechanic prior to import.
If C1 makes small change to replace metadata tool with fully functional metadata tool to address pre-import, all scenarios will be covered....
