CO 21 on Windows 7

    Massimo,

As I have been told there is no official support for Win 7 now but it may still work. Mostly.

I found during that on my system it would not start reliably and so I abandoned testing V21 and have, so far, stayed with V20.

Bear in mind that if you continue with V21 and IF things become less compatible over  - which I assume is quite likely since no one will be officially checking for compatibility  - going back may be difficult since Catalogues and Sessions created with V21 will now be recognised by V20 and the same will generally be true for any session edits even if one finds a way to re-identify them that might make the files involved appear to be creations of the earlier version.

I will guess that, like me, you are using a relatively old PC if it has Win 7. Mine still works really well which surprises me since it is 8 years old. However I am very aware that being 8 years old it is close to the point that things might start to fail and be difficult to replace or even find replacement parts. Batteries and power supplies still seem to be available (but I have now had 2 replacement non-OEM power supplies fail). However the SSD's are well used and I had a screen hinge (It's a notebook) break last year. So one way or another having some certainty about reliability and availability becomes a concern. My existing "previous systems" for backup facilities are well past their useful life except in extreme emergencies or for some old legacy software based activities.

So I have just ordered a new PC to see how they compare and with the intention of allowing a smooth transition from one to the other but still have access to some older software that I would not plan to migrate at the moment or may not be possible to migrate anyway without some re-licencing costs that I cannot justify for those applications.

Hopefully the new machine will work out well and last at least as long as the current one has managed so far.

So that is my situation. If those observations help your planning in any way you are welcome to adopt or adapt them!

Thanks for the prompt reply and detailed suggestions SFA. I have a five years old Dell workstation. Actually is not that bad, I mean double Xeon 16 threads each, 32 Gb RAM, SSD, Quadro graphic card ecc. So I would like to stay with it for the moment. I'm considering to enhance it though.

I'm a bit worried to mess up things with the downgrade, but I'll try anyway.

    Hi Massimo,

Dell Precision laptop here. 2012 vintage.  Still works fine. Built like a tank and other than what I mentioned before plus dust collection in the fans that requires a little dismantling to remove, some cosmetic wear  and the rubber feet disappearing (probably because I do use it as a laptop) it's been excellent. I'm hoping the newest version is just as good.

I don't think you can mess up the downgrade (in terms of data) unless you try really hard!

Both sessions and catalogs create a backup of older sessions that you can simply rename by removing the obvious backup file extension. You may want to create a backup of the V21 catalogue or session db file first in case you want to return to it in the future.

If you go back to an old catalog you will revert the edit status of all of the images and, of course, any newly added images in V21 will not be in V20. As with any catalogues created in V21, to get V20 edits would mean start again time - or a lot of messing around.

If you use sessions then the cosessiondb for V20 will only know about images and albums, etc, as it was last used on V20.

However the edits data for the images should be found in entirely separate folders in the sub-folder structure under the Image's storage folder. In recent times these have been held separately by Version so reverting to "as it was" should be easy and automatic.

System settings in the "Appdata" system folders have also been held seperately to make it simple to go back and use on older version and you should also find the same for things like userconfig file settings.

So as long as everything is still there and where it was in terms of file location, all that is required is rename the catalogue or session file you wish to use. Then re-load and re-work whatever was only in V21.

I hope that helps a little.
