Is it possible to edit Lightroom Smart Previews in Capture One?
I made the switch from LR to C1 years ago and haven't had a reason to look back - until now.
A friend in another country who is far busier than me (damn you, COVID) would like for me to edit his photos so he can take on more jobs. Research so far tells me that the most common way people send their RAW files to outsourcing editing companies is by using (industry standard) LR: Lightroom Library > Previews > Build Smart Previews and then exporting as a Catalog in a Zip file.
Not only do I greatly prefer the workflow and results I get with C1 over LR, but it's what I'm used to. I'd like to edit his photos using C1, but I'm not sure if I'm able to do so, and even if so, would there be any problems when my friend went to open his photos back in LR? Would I have to send finished edited photos back as jpgs instead if LR is unable to attach edits made in C1? Would sending back edited photos as tiffs be an option if my friend wanted to make further, final touch edits to edits I'd make?
I'm not aware of another way to quickly send large RAW files online, hence the usual conversion to LR Smart Previews. I'm assuming FileZilla/FTP may be an option, but not sure of it's limitations as far as speed/capacity (something I'm looking into).
Another question while I'm here. Is there any disadvantage or limitations as far as not being able to use all the C1 tools/features in doing something similar with C1 previews while editing offline?

No you can not do that. Lr smart previews are around 2500px sized images, if you export the smart previews to jpgs then you could work on the jpgs in Capture One, you could even convert them to tiffs if you watned, but there is no way to get those edits to link back up with the original RAW files and you're stuck with 2500px as your maximum size.
