    It sounds as though you have a greyscale mask enabled. Where there is no mask, it will appear black, and where there is a mask it will appear white. Alt-M enables or disables the display of the greyscale mask. (And M enables or disables the display of the regular (red) mask.) Try pressing Alt-M, or going to Layer>Mask visibility on the menus.

    This is an annoying on ongoing problem ever since the healing brush was introduced.  It happens to me when the healing brush is used and there is Clarity and/or Structure used on base layer.  Turn off/reset Clarity and Structure and the problem goes away.
