I have never seen that. If you wait a minute, does it then allow you to close the document normally, or does it actually never finish processing the mask?

It never (at least not over night after 8hrs) actually finishes processing the mask.

I assume that his goes hand in hand with the issues I get with CO V20 that corrupted so many of my projects by killing masks.

I have seen this once.   I noticed some unresponsiveness when editing an image and tried to close/re-open the app.   This was on the initial release of Capture One v 21.

My assumption is a transitory error occurred when creating the mask file which Capture One did not handle.   There are system services that can fail but rarely do.   Programmers tend to treat such calls as always succeeding.  When they do fail the program doesn't know how to recover.  If that is the case waiting won't help.

that's not good to hear, for commercial projects this level of unreliability is insane. i stopped using c20 for processing files because I too have lost a lot of work caused by mask problems. so the difference between c20 and c21 is that instead of really fixing the issue they now display a warning massage so we do not get surprised later when we reopen the project...  hm, great done c1 !

So it seems that I'm not the only one who encountered that CO is totally unreliable.

Such a bug for such a long time.

And no reaction from CO at all !

"Der Krug geht so lange zum Brunnen bis er bricht"

after many years were c1 was my primary raw converter I moved my processing to adobe although I prefer the c1 layer and mask implementation. but what a difference, no crashes no lost masks,  I also bought dxo 4, similar experience. for a product which markets itself as the first choice for professionals this reliable issues are unforgivable. they have no problem asking for much more money in a crisis so im sure they do not care if they lose some professional photographers.....

I have seen this error several times. Please try switching off any non-standard icc-profile in "View Profile" and also in Recipe proofing. Selecting either Adobe RGB or sRGB is fine but any "paper icc" does lead to these masking issues. It also slows down several activities related to masking.

@ frank  i have seen a lot of "not loading mask"  issues with c20 and I never used anything else than workspace profiles.

Never seen it in C20 and in C21 I can switch it on and off on different computer by changing the icc. It took me some time to figure out that a selected recipe also might use an icc causing the issue. The issue I see has been confirmed by the CaptureOne team and they are working on it.

just tried to replicate it (c21)  with printer profiles generated by 2 different software solutions but everything worked fine even when both recipe and proof are set to different printer profiles

So it is not a general issue but related to some other setting or hardware. C1 will need to find this out. I have seen several similar complains over the past weeks and they can reproduce it in testing and development. Hopefully they will find the issue as switching icc (I see the issue even when proofing is deactivated) is somewhat frustrating as I print directly from C1 on different paper.

it seems with c1 it is often the case that you see bugs depending on hardware or os version. did you ever check if your profiles are maybe damaged or have other issues ?

Yes, they are fine. I am using a new iMac with a clean install and Capture One was able to reproduce the issue with their iccs.
