Camera not attaching for tethered shooting on MBP

I have an ongoing issue with my cameras not attaching to MBP 16 (Catalina). This mostly happens when I'm in locations with no WIFI. Here are the only ways I've been able to get it to connect:

- turn laptop wifi off
- take memory cards out of the camera

This will pretty consistently allow the camera to connect but is a huge pain. Anyone else running into this? Cameras connect instantly on my Windows laptops.  

Technical info:
Macbook Pro 16 running Catalina
Attaching Nikon D850 / D810
Problem occurs with C1 12 as well as C1 20

    I'll add that I tried all of the problem solving I could find, including the ones posted around here, with no luck.
