NEF vs Tiff v PSD when Keywording or Labeling

I apologize if this has been asked.  I was not able to get a hit when searching.

I'm hoping to be able to SEPARATE keywords, labels and ratings between 'variants'

I have an NEF file, and exported it through CO to PS,  to process  The processed version has been converted to B&W. 

When I Keyword the B&W version with the keyword black and white, it also is being applied to the NEF.  

I believe I'm seeing the same for Color Labeling.  Unfortunately when I search for black and white keyworded images, the color versions come up as well. 

Am I setup incorrectly somewhere?
