Only you can decide which is the correct option for your use.   I've tried all three preference options and decided the time hit wasn't worthwhile for read/write or read only in my day-to-day use.  Your needs may  be different.

If I want to create an XMP file for a specific image I select that image and use Image -> Sync Metadata.  If I want to read an XMP file that was created or updated with other software I select the image and use Image -> Load Metadata.   Both of these options are also available from the right click context menu in the Browser.

If you are not seeing the results you want you might need to check one of the boxes in the Metadata section of the Image tab in program preferences.

Thank you Marco, very helpful indeed.

I think if you have also experienced a performance hit with the auto features, then knowing that there is a manual creation option, is enough for me.

I don’t have any need to use separate software than C1 at the mo & hopefully will never need to, but because I’m going to start using keywords more I thought it may be an extra back up of this data.

But then thinking about it, everything is backed up in the catalog file (which is also itself backed up a number of times) and so the only reason I would need the separate xmp is yeah if I needed to transfer to another software, to in which case if that ever happens, then I’ll just manually create them at the time. :)
