How to use Apple Photos, iCloud and Capture One at the same time
Hi there, I'm new in this community.
I hope you could help me.
Like many of us I was a really satisfied Aperture user. I was keeping using it year after year but now I think it time to go ahead.
Since a quite big library built in a decade I signed for 2TB apple icloud service and I really appreciate the synchronization among my devices (macbook pro, iphone) and the cloud.
I do really make basic adjustments on my photos but I would like to use CaptureOne Express for fujifilm rather than Photos for the basic adjustments.
Is there any chance (I would really appreciate your ideas) to keep using my 2TB icloud account, apple photos for browsing and Capture one for editing?
I didn't find a solution. Could be a good idea to import the new raw files from a shooting session directly to photos and open the one I would like to edit with the functionality "edit with..." and choosing Capture One?
What will happen when I close the file? It will update it on photos?

Hi Andrea,
I use another technique.
I have C1P dealing with the RAW's in one structure.
And using the "tokens", I set the export path in JPG to a similar structure, that is operated by Aperture.This way, I keep my RAWs safe, and I use the "lighter" JPGs for viewing.
The tokens of C1P are a powerful tool, and it could help you to maintain parallel structures without the hassle of doing it manually.Not sure I am very clear here, but feel free to ask details if interested.

Thanks Claude, I go deep in undestanding how the "tokens" work.
Two other questions:
1) What about exporting in JPG to Photos to have them on every devices and icloud?
2) is it possible to deal with the RAW structure if you set in on an iCloud drive?
So both the JPEGs and the RAWs will be safe on the cloud

Tokens are a very powerful tool - but I wish that, as usual, C1 would listen to our demands and add the ones suggested... Nothing's perfect.
I am not sure how you could export your pictures directly into Photos.
Afraid that they will be located at the right place, but that you might need to import them manually.
Or perhaps with an AppleScript if you have some coding abilities ?I never keep RAWs on the Cloud, because they are too big and require too many slow resources to upload/modify them. But that is just a personal choice.
I prefer to keep them locally - with a backup on a NAS.
And possibly backup that NAS on another NAS - or, yes, on a cloud - but at regular intervals then (once a week, for example).0 -
Interesting - one often forget the power of Automator !
But that won't keep them in separate folders, will it ?

Coming late to this discussion so you may have sorted it by now. I used Automator to create a watched folder to pull images into a specific folder in Photos, and a Process Recipe in CO that exports a full size JPEG sharpened for screen into that folder. I do sometimes need to go into Photos and change the folder the image sits in but that’s no problem.

Hi there. I'm coming back first of all to thank Claude, "Monochromist" and Ian for their advices and to explain the workflow I've adopted, if it could be interesting for someone.
After two months usage, I'm operating in this way:
1) I shot both in RAW and JPEG FINE on my fuji X-E4
NOTE: I use in-camera JPEGs only if I'd like to share some picture after the shot but I've noticed that the JPEGs converted from RAW via Capture ONE are really really richer in terms of detail and dynamic range.
2) I import only RAW pictures from my camera into Capture One Express for fujifilm connecting an external drive and I store the RAW there.
3) I start reviewing my shots. I just delete, crop, change fujifilm film simulation and other soft changes.
4) when I'm happy with the selection, I export "variants" in JPEG (Quality: 100%) in a temporary folder
5) I copy this folder into Photo Library. Doing so, the JPEGs are sent automatically to my icloud sharing them among all my and family devices.
6) I delete the JPEGs from the temporary folder, freeing space on the Hard Drive.
7) I've asked Amazon Photos to backup the RAW file folder on the external Hard Drive to backup all the pictures on Amazon cloud. It's free and I've got unlimited free space for pictures.

In this way I've all the JPEGs in a safe place on my 2TB icloud storage and always handy.
RAW files in a safe place both on Amazon Cloud and on my External HD Drive.
Just for been more relaxed I'll back up my external drive to have another physical copy of my RAW.

Thank you, Andrea, for posting your workflow. I’m in the same situation and will follow your suggestions. Te Amazon tip is great as a cloud backup.
