Catalog on Synology via NFS
Hello All -
I keep my photos on a Synology NAS -- I just copy sessions there from my other machines. In the past, I've been reluctant to devote much time to creating a larger catalog of my past work because, even though the catalog itself lives on a local SSD, everything has just been painfully slow using C1, and it was the only real downside of my move from Lightroom a few years ago.
This is a highly anecdotal and non-data-driven comment, but I have just started using NFS to access them from my Mac rather than SMB, and things seem to be a great deal snappier. This could be for a variety of reasons: NFS can be faster for small files, so perhaps accessing all those XMPs makes the difference!
Past experience in other situations makes me more nervous about NFS in situations where the network connection may be unreliable, so I'd be a bit more hesitant if I had a dodgy wifi setup. But my iMac has an ethernet connection to the NAS and things are looking very good so far, so I thought I'd mention it in case others are in the same situation.
Oh, as an aside, the free ConnectMeNow utility is a very handy way of establishing and re-establishing connections to network shares.
