Future Capture One improvements
Having just watched Paul Reiffer and his reiterated suggestion to make our desires for C1 improvements known even if it's not likely to happen overnight (or at all), I decided that that I’d have another go. When I look at them I realize that none are game changers but merely workflow improvements.
- When I crop an image and then use the Healing brush, C1 will often select the target point outside of the crop, which I can’t see so I can’t change its position. I don’t mind that the target point is outside of the crop, but I need to see that source, so maybe pop back the whole image. I could heal before I crop but healing generally comes a lot later in my workflow.
- I would like to be able to see more information in the Browser, especially current image size in MB. But other metadata details are often useful, so being able to choose what is in the browser under a thumbnail (like in Bridge) would be of great benefit to me.
- It would be great if there were keyboard shortcut opportunities for “Copy mask from Layer below” and “Copy and Invert mask from Layer below”. I do this now by hand. It’s repetitive and mindless so it should lend itself to keyboard shortcuts. To explain why I’d like this: In my regular workflow I will often mask the subject in a new layer, then create another layer, copy the mask and then invert it. This way I have complete and independent control over my foreground and background. For most of this process I have created keyboard shortcuts (Create empty layer, Fill Mask, Refine Mask) and being able to make and use these new shortcuts would cut the drudgery and speed things up.
- I use Custom Process Recipes to create specific output that goes into a specific subfolder (eg Large Jpgs). I’d like to be able to use the Library file tree in C1 to check that the new files are actually there after the Process Recipe has been run. That sub folder is there as soon as I run that Recipe, but C1's Library just doesn't show that it's there. Right now I use Adobe Bridge to check on those subfolders.
- I’d like to be able to change the Browser thumbnail indicator. When a thumbnail is selected now it creates a wide white border around the thumbnail. When additional thumbnails are selected a finer white border is created. Both borders are hard to see on certain images. I’d like to have the option to change the border colours (say red for selected thumbnail, and green for additional selected thumbnails). That way there would be no doubt as to what has or has not been selected. Having the ability to customize those colours would be useful depending on the specific subject’s colour.
- This next one is pretty obscure. Under Process Recipe/Metadata “Rating and Color Tag” is not a checked default, I often overlook it when I’m setting up a new recipe, and the rating is not handed off to the created file. I need to be able to look at a folder with a completed set of jpgs and be able to see their rating. “Are these 5’s? 3’s”. If I was going to remove anything from the Process Recipe/Metadata default category it would be GPS. Without GPS the image on the internet is a photo of a pretty girl. With GPS in the metadata people can find her.

Having more information for the thumbnails in the browser would be a big improvement. Lighroom, Adobe Bridge and ACDSee all allow for that flexibility. You can pick the information that shows with each thumbnail. This would be a huge improvement over the lack of any flexibility that exists in the current product.
