    There is a General preferences option to open catalogs and sessions in new windows.  If you check that option you can have multiple sessions open at the same time.  That is not as helpful as it may seem if you are running full screen on one display and even though multiple sessions might be open you can see but one.

    If that option isn't checked what you describe is how it works.  At least that is how it works using the standard Session folders.  You can, however, still visit any folder in any session.  I have a session where my standard session folders are only used short term.   The files are moved elsewhere when I'm done.   I can visit the destination folder still in the session and see the images.  If I make that folder a Session Favorite it becomes easier to re-visit the folder later in the future.
