    Just use the finder to navigate to the catalogue (or session?) you want to use and select to open it.

    C1 will want to convert the catalogue to V21 but will save a copy of the existing V20 (or whatever) version just as it was.

    Once the V21 "document" is ready you should see everything in it as usual.

    Yes the updates are, usually, fresh installations or overwrites but any personalised user settings that were not originally part of the default installation files should be retained going back some releases and several years. Just in case someone, for some reason, wants to completely revert to a much older version and state. 

    Dynamic settings, like "Recents" and a few other things usually found in plists on a Mac (userconfig files on PCs) may not always be carried forward. IN many cases it is likely something in the working data content will have changed and the temporary and dynamic user files may no longer be pertinent after the update.  Usually one is not especially aware of the changes.
