Checkpoints during RAW processing

There is no history panel in CO. How can I at least save checkpoints in my editing to return to, if I screw up, without having to reset the image back to the beginning?

    Use the Clone a variant option to create an easily referenced copy of a particular set of edit instructions. 

    Also useful for versions of the edit to be used for different purposes, different crop ideas, etc.
