Any reason why my CO21 might be so laggy on my iMac (i5 Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019)

There is a considerable delay between moving a slider or using a brush and seeing any effect. Surely my machine is capable of running this without such lag?
Any ideas what might be the cause?

    I had the Sony version that was bundled with my camera from way back and I was learning the program with that. After finding my feet I decided to upgrade to the full version so I could edit all my old Canon Raw files and not need Lightroom any more.

    I'm extremely glad I did not upgrade to 21 for the features. I just installed 20 and it runs like a dream. Not sure what the hell they did to break 21 but it's going to be a while before I feel the need to try that again.
