Ok here's a small update for this issue. I just found that this happens only with my xcd card in the camera. Again it works fine in Lightroom but not with C1, unless I remove the XQD... strange

The tether functionality permitted by camera manufacturers is not always the same and the software vendors do not always use the same approach. So differences are to be expected.

Some manufacturers - Sony and Fuji notably in recent times for some of their models - have offered camera to computer connectivity modes that specifically cater for the traditional "Mass Storage device" connectivity and a separate "Camera Control" connection that, for them, means the cards can be left in the camera and the computer will not make first claims on connecting to the device as a disk drive, thus preventing a camera control connection for tethering. (I think this automatic connection can be turned off at the operating system level but that may have other unwanted effects for general operations.)

I'm not sure whether such an option is available for the Nikons. Others here may be able to offer advice from experience.  The Camera manual may help.

As a Canon user I expect to have to make sure that memory cards are removed although it may be that for recent camera models they too have provided alternative modes that allow memory cards to be left in the camera when fully tethered.

Theree is an option in C1 to work with a "Hot Folder" whereby one can run everything from the camera and save files to the computer at a specific folder location that C1 monitors. It's not the same as full tethering with Capture One controlling the camera but may be more suited some shooting situations.
