C1 not responding (properly)

    Well, I found the answer:

The issue was solved by disabling the Hardware Acceleration (Open CL). I.e setting it to "never" @Display.

Oh well, who would have thought.

    Perhaps someone finds this useful.

It is quite often the cure. On a Windows computer, which it seems you have, it may be worth checking your graphics card driver - is a new driver available for it?

    Christian,

Check the log files for the Graphics driver assessment and initiation process.

With my older machine running Win 7 I had some strange experiences with the assessment process which struggled with attempting to build a kernel for the embedded Intel software GPU solution. Often, when running a new assessment the process would fail at 93% complete due to some issues with the driver code for the Intel solution. That crashed the process and so stopped the NVidia card kernel builds as well.

After a restart the re-assessment seemed to know about the failed Intel attempt and ignored that "card" (which would be rejected anyway due to lack of performance even if the build was successful) and successfully built the required kernel for the NVidia card.

With my new system (Win 10) the Intel build, after an immediate update suggested as soon as I started to use it, seems to build the Intel kernel successfully (although it is never fast to complete the build - takes several minutes) and I have the use of both "GPUs" since both are powerful enough to justify making them part of the solution.

So definitely check for new drivers.

In the NVidia world I believe there are 2 different development lines for the drivers depending on the intended use of the GPU so you may need to check which path and version best suits your overall needs. Or, if your hardware offers comprehensive system update support (as Dell offer, for example) you can probably make good use of the suggestions they propose from time to time.

Apart from those observations, as you are using quite a large dimension of preview file do you have a large pixel dimension screen to make use of it? If you do, do you have plenty of Memory for all the Previews and thumbnails that C1 will attempt to load?

    Thank you for your replies.

Yes, I am working on a Windows 10 Computer (Microsoft Surface Book Pro 2, 16GB RAM - all Software updates). I just checked and Windows does not find any new drivers available.

I know the proprietary NVIDIA Software does give some additional possibilities, but I'd prefer to stick to Microsofts Surface Software. Mainly beacause this Laptop has two graphic cards inbuild and apparently there can be conflicts.

Nevertheless, I am now pretty sure, that the hardware acceleration the cause of many small issues is that I've had with capture One over the past years. (inability to delete pictures, trouble closing the software, trouble exporting pictures, etc.) - all the issues (which I had not mentioned in the comment above) have now disappeared since turning the hardware acceleration off. I have had such issues for years (over different Versions of C1 and also 3 different Laptops - all MS Books)

This tells me that the problem is something inherently with hardware acceleration and MS Books Pro

I wouldn't be surprised, if many other people using a MS BookPro would solve their issues by disabling it as well.

    Thank you for your tips.

    Kindest, Chris

PS: @SFA thank you for the hint - while a MS Book has 3240x2160 resolution and I also have a 4K monitor, it still makes only little sense to keep the 2560 preview resolution. That is however the *default* from C1. But I will reduce to 2048.

Hi Christian I am having the exact same issue after upgrading to Capture one 21.

It just froze and no edits could be done. Would appreciate it if you could describe how you disabled the Harware acceleration if possible. Capture one Support is of no use whatsoever. Appreciate it and Thanks very much!

    hi Fazil,

Sure, you just go to Edit>Preferences, then under General disable Hardware acceleration. See picture below:

    I hope this helps

    chris

PS: And yes, apparently C1 does not have any support beyond this forum whatsoever.

    Hi Christian,

Thanks so very much for describing this to me.  Sorry I am not tech savvy (age is catching up), so had to ask you this.  It works!!! Now I can use C1 again finally.

Thanks again really, for taking the time. Immense appreciation!.
