Why is the update/upgrade process so convoluted?
I have Capture One 20 Fujifilm v13.1.1.31 and I was prompted by the software that there is an update. When I click on the download for 14.2.0, a message comes up that says "This update could be payable - Depending on your license, you may have to pay for this update."
This is unbelievably confusing. You should not call it an update if it is paid. This should be called an UPGRADE. When did software development get so confusing when releasing an UPDATE. Its pretty standard across the industry to provide UPDATES free of charge when fixing issues, updating features, heck, maybe even including additional features for your customers.
I purchased a perpetual license. I'm not going to buy a subscription license, ever. I don't use the software enough to warrant it but I believed that Capture One had a great product so I wanted to support the team behind it. However, this paid update nonsense is enough to drive me back to Adobe.
If the update available is free, why not just let me update it from within the app? If it is paid, just say so. Seriously guys/gals, why does this have to be so unbelievably convoluted to the point where I'm clicking back and forth between the app and the website and even then, nothing is happening...
It seems like the forums don't even receive any replies from the CO team so I'm guessing this won't get answered either.

OK, I think I understand how this works now but this is atrocious. You should not be pushing a new version on end users if the license associated to the account is already known to be ineligible for this UPGRADE to the new version. This should be displayed to users up front that their existing license is not eligible for a free "update." Making this mysterious by saying "you may have to pay for this update" is needlessly confusing. Just read the installed license or run a check on the profile like you're doing when attempting to activate. That way, people aren't installing the software only to find they don't have a valid license for the upgrade.
I don't know who is responsible for this or who is behind the decision-making for the development of the application but this is really awful.

Same here. The "updates", "upgrades", "pay me more" is ok once per year, but every six months is a stretch for a handful of added features. Not happy with this decision my the developers. Also, making it difficult to understand and maybe downloading a trial version, then not being able to go back. Sneaky tactics.

I left the software behind. As much as I wanted to like it and stay away from Lightroom, this stuff just annoyed me to hell. Of course, no response from any official channel so I never looked back.

I may need to bail as well. I don't like bait and switch tactics. Just let me know if the updates are free and how much will this cost me per year.

Dang, I just looked. You posted a year ago with no response! this isn't going to work for me.
