Smart Object
If I edit an image in Capture One and process/transfer that image to Photoshop as a jpeg for additional adjustments.
In order to edit that image as a Smart Object in Photoshop, do I need to save it first in Capture One or Photoshop as a jpeg?
Thank you for your time.

Make your edits inside Capture One then use Edit with... option and select Photoshop or other editor. I happen to use Affinity. Pick your format. Doesn't have to be jpeg. If sending it to Photoshop you might want to pick PSD. Click on the Edit Variants button.
Capture One will save your edited image in the desired format and add it to your catalog or session. Then it will pass the name of the save file to your external editor. Inside Photoshop you may need to select the background layer and change it to a smart object; I don't remember.
When finished editing in Photoshop save. Do not use Save As... If you save Capture one will see the edits you made in photoshop. That won't be the case if you save as unless you import the newly saved image, leaving you with three copies instead of two.
I don't do this often and may have stated something wrong. If so I hope someone else jumps in and corrects me.

Hi Marco,
Thank you for your quick reply, much appreciated.
You are spot on, convert the background layer to a smart object by right clicking on the layer, then save.

The only thing I would add to what Marco said is that the third option for Edit with... is to send it to Photoshop as a TIFF.

Ian, does TIFF vs PSD make a difference when sending to Photoshop? I don't know. I have this general idea that the image is a TIFF inside the PSD, but I don't know if that is accurate. My thought was using a PSD might save more info for subsequent editing by Photoshop.
