so confused
I received a free version of Capture One Express for Fujifilm with the purchase of my camera, and just now I purchased what I thought was an upgrade to Capture One Pro for Fuji, but the copy of the app I downloaded looks exactly like the Express version (no layers, for instance.) And there appears to be no way to reach out to Capture One to sort this out. Are they like the Wizard of Oz--unreachable? Thanks for any help you might have in connecting with them.

The thing you download is the same for ALL flavors of Capture One: Pro, Fuji, Nikon, Sony, Express, etc. The thing that enables the differenced between flavors is the license key. Look at the License... menu item in the Capture One menu. It will tell you what license key you are currently using. It sounds like you didn't deallocation the key for the Express version and enter the new key for the version you purchased.

As Marco has said - if you have not already de-activated the Express version that will continue to be the type that is operational when you open C1.
So deactivate it, re-open Capture One and when prompted for an activation key, use the new key that was issued when you paid for the Pro for Fuji option.
