Healing problem

I watched the tutorial on healing and cloning and have a question about healing. I can start my layer and use the brush to try and remove unwanted objects. In the tutorial it shows that after using the healing brush the item just disappears. Mine doesn't. What is the step I'm missing to get the object to disappear?
