Catalogue Trash Contains Original RAWs

I have been batch renaming a lot of raw images recently. I just noticed the Trash folder. It contains all the original raw images that I have renamed; the renamed images are in their correct folder. It seems as though, when renaming, the file with the original file name is transferred to the Trash, NOT JUST any that I have assigned as Trash. This is very strange! Does the Trash contain a copy of the raw image, or just a link to the original location? Any comments welcome.

  Depends.
  With sessions, all folders contain only actual files so files will get moved to the trash folder.
  With catalogs, the trash is just a special case of a collection.
  So no files actually get moved there, they are just marked as being in the trash collection.

  Re-naming should not be putting anything into the trash.
