    "External" may span multiple connection technologies. Some may work better than others.

    Ultimately, as OddS points out, whether you are satisfied with the performance available will depend on the connection technology, what you perceive to be "fast enough" and what sort of editing activity you undertake.

    The latter will, to some extent, affect how your system uses its memory for working with C1 and therefore how much data it is passing backwards and forwards through the connection to the external device.

    At the least, be sure the external drive is SSD and connected with USB3 or later. Then the relative performance depends on what your internal hard drive is. If it's really a traditional HDD, the external could be faster. If the internal's an SSD then the external may or may not be faster, depending on the factors mentioned above.
