Creative editing for wildlife photos
Hi folks,
I'm on C1 14.3 (latest ver).
I'd like to step up my editing process for my wildlife photos similar (not not exactly) to this following tutorial in another piece of software:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_6PC7HN0zw
At this point, I can't seem to do everything in C1 like duplicate a layer and then add colour.
I found out how to isolate the background, but then when I try to add a gradient layer, it's applied to my main subject as well instead of just the background.
Any help or direction would be great. I'm not against paying anyone for their time to teach me some tricks. Again, lots of C1 videos out there, but they seem to focus on the basics which is not knocking the sw because I like it alot.
Cheers,
Brian

Hello Brian,
Lots of things to say here.
First, that I am very far from a C1P pro. Many on this forum will have the ability to help you better.
Second, C1P and Photoshop do not serve the same purposes: C1P is a RAW developer, while PS is a pixel-editor.
Third, using the appropriate tools in C1P (certainly with the new Magic Brush and the Styles brushes) would bring you to a +/- similar result in much less time (*) - without altering your original image. You could get a lot of inspiration from the videos on how to use layers in C1P.
And finally, don't forget that C1P can export results to PS for final adjustments.
Probably some pros can teach you for a fee - i wouldn't go that way, as I would feel that it would not be worth the money. Experimenting and testing by yourself, on the contrary, will be a far more productive way of improving your techniques, and above all, maintain and develop your creativity.
(*) The process described in your video takes an incredible amount of time ! Imagine doing this for every single image you take and like ?

Hi Brian,
The blurring of the background to the extend in this video would be a Photoshop task. However, you can make a background selection on a layer and take out contrast/clarity/structure/sharpness and use healing or clone tool to clean up.
All the color editing and sharpening is no problem in Capture One. Color Balance and Color Editor can do everything for you.

Thanks Claude. I definitely won't be doing this for every photograph - just ones I want to stand out. For example, I was photographing peregrine falcons today and I managed a flight shot coming right at me - 30 different wing formations. I'd like to pick the one I like the best and artistically pay it tribute :)
I've spent some time watching videos and will do so more over the weekend.

Also thanks April. I'm going to try the background selection you suggested. I was looking at luma layers as well today. I do appreciate everything C1 does. I think I need to dedicated some hard time at it to push it creatively. I also have Affinity Photo to which I can export and try some techniques.
Thank you to both of you for taking the time to respond.
Cheers,
Brian0
