Capture one 21 14.3 will not open

    Ok. I don't know how much help I'll be, but first point: C1 21 (aka 14.x) modifies the catalogues which makes them unable to be opened by C1 20. I imagine you would a backup of your catalogue which C1 20 should be able to open? Also, don't forget Time Machine.

    On your second point, how did you try to open your catalogue from 21.2?

    How did I open C1 21.2.  I relaunched the dmg & tried to open it.  I got a message: the license code could not be verified by the server.  Please deactivate or quit the application.  If the problem persists please contact support.  Kind of a doomed feeling.  I have shut down my computer & tried to open C1 20 & 21.  No luck.  Gheesh.  Thank you for your help.

    I don't quite understand the given explanations.  

    Could not read catalog data. "The Catalog was saved with a newer version of Capture One and cannot be read by this version. Or another catalog is open."

    There is no version of Capture One that newer than 21.3.  The "Or another catalog is open" part is also something I've not seen in conjunction with the newer version message.   I have seen messages warning me that another Capture One had the catalog open.  That can happen when the computer or Capture One crashes.  There is a very easy fix for that.

    If you have a license code for Capture One 21 and you wish to go back to Capture One 20 you have to use the latest license code, not the one you got when you initially purchased Capture One 20.   Also, you'll have to go back to a catalog that had never been updated to Capture One 21.   That, too, is usually an easy fix, but do you really want to lose all work done since using Capture One 21?

    I think some screen shots of the actual messages you are seeing might be helpful.

    I downloaded captureone21.mac-4.3.0.  I like the easy fix for when computer or capture one crashes. Im not sure how to fix it but Im good with easy.  My updates have mixed together when I thought the 21 version was going into my 21 catalog but somehow it made its way into the 2020 version. It didn't seem to cause any trouble as this happen a few updates back.  Maybe it caught up with me?

    I sent screen shots of my error messages via email.  I wasn't sure how to drag them into this page, the files were too large.

    When Capture One is running it creates a "lock" file.   The purpose of the lock file is to stop other copies of Capture One from accessing the same catalog at the same time. When Capture One quits the lock file is removed.   If there is a crash the lock file still exists so Capture One thinks there is another copy using the catalog and wont let you open.  If that happens

    1. quit Capture One
    2. navigate to the folder containing your catalog in finder
    3. right clock on the catalog -- the file ending in .cocatalog -- and select Show Package Contents
    4. You will see a couple of folders, a .cocatalogdb file, and possibly .cocatalogdb.backup files created by Capture One whenever it updates the format of the catalog for new releases. You'll also see a file named "writelock".   Remove the "writelock" file.
    5. close the finder window.
    6. re-launch Capture One

    Capture One will no longer things the catalog is in use and will let you open the catalog -- provided it wasn't damaged by whatever caused the crash, of course.

    I followed your instructions.  There were 9 backup files but no "write lock".  BUT I clicked the catalog for 2020 version & capture one was relaunched.  At that point I could open 2021 also.  

    For sure you saved my photo's.  I know my folders need to be simplified.  It has been a work in progress.  I have sabatoged myself trying to have categories with subfolders.  Im really happy leaving lightroom to have more control over my folders.  I can't thank you enough for solving my dilemma.
