Highlights

I think there is a limitation in kb to paste here into the user to user forum but other than that I don't see why not. It is allowed.
I have heard often that C1 is better with shadows and Adobe better with highlights but I cannot confirm this. When I decided to go the C1 route I made a comparison with LR but that's a while ago, and I liked the C1 image quality better than LR for most of the images, not all.
But you should try one thing: C1 tends to be more contrasty out of the box. Instead of the Auto tone curve try the linear response curve in the base characteristics tool if you are having blown out highlights. This curve creates a flatter image first which is a good starting point for further editing, it is recommended especially (but not exclusively) if you want to tweak with the Curves tool. After you adjust contrast and saturation (with one or the other tool) this often yields a very nice result and you can preserve highlights better. That does not mean it matches Adobe exactly.
In general, it takes a while to grasp how all the tools work in C1, and how they work together, as they work somewhat different than LR or other software.

BeO's advice is a good recommendation as Linear curve gives you more starting headroom. Are you using the Whites slider as well? In LR Whites are used to set your white point. In C1 Levels (not available in LR) are used to set Black and White points, as in Photoshop. Broadly speaking Highlights controls the top 25% of the histogram and Whites the top 5% (Black slider does the same for the bottom 5% of the histogram) this gives you very good control of the highlights and shadows and I find C1 superior to LR.

Great advice and thanks. I do know what the left and right does with blacks and whites for sure! I will use the linear method in capture one.
I do love how much better images are in C1 but having used photoshop for soooo many years I wanted to try out the C1 before purchase...yes there's a bigger new learning curve so will just keep going!0
