Short cut key for viewer freezes

when I try to use the short cut key G in view mode to toggle from picture to viewer I get that colourful beach ball that spins for several minutes. If I'm in viewer mode and select picture open and use short cut key G to open it works once but to go back it hangs and the beach ball appears.

Any suggestions?
