Activating C1 V20.0.4 after trial - error message "The catalog was saved with Capture One ?.0.9 and cannot be read by this version."

I finally decided to move over to C1 after being a long time LR user. Downloaded a trial of C1 v20.0.4 (as this is the maximum version I can run on my Mac).  Unfortunately the new software purchase changes took place during my trial - so after my trial ended I chose the option of purchasing a license outright.

Before purchase I had contacted C1 and had two staff members verify that "Any of purchases can also activate older versions, including Capture One 20. " and "You can certainly buy only a new version of Capture One, but its keys are backwards-compatible, meaning that you can activate any old version with that key."

After purchasing and entering the new license keys, I received the message:

"Unable to Open Catalog
The Catalog is currently in use by **. The catalog can only be opened when no other users have it open."

and following that:
"Open
A file names /Users/**/Pictures/Capture One Catalog.cocatalog already exists but cannot be read. The file will be renamed to “/Users/**/Pictures/Capture One Catalog/Previous Capture One.cocatalog” and a new session created in its place."
 
I followed C1 support's instructions and deleted the writelock file.  After trying to open C1 again, I am now receiving this message:

"The catalog was saved with Capture One ?.0.9 and cannot be read by this version."
 
Support staff are totally useless and have just told me to ensure I'm using the latest C1 version - after me initially telling them I can only run v20!!
Can someone shed some light on this? I have a purchased license that seems essentially unusable (short of buying a brand new Mac).  Any help would be most appreciated.

    A catalog which was created (or updated) with a higher version of C1 cannot be read by an older version of C1.

    "Capture One ?.0.9" is of course a nonsense text.

    You write about your license purchase but not about setup/install. Did you eventually download and install a different version than you used during your trial period?

    Thanks for your response.  Originally I had just downloaded a trial of the latest version of C1 but soon realised my Mac wasn't compatible. Removed this and C1 support provided me with a link to download v20.0.4 which installed and worked perfectly during the trial.  I haven't tried to download another version as I know this is as far as I can go with versions.  The error message actually has the question mark in the text ("Capture One ?.0.9") so I don't know why it is doing this?
