Preview size in pixels (which preview ?)(which pixels ?)

In Preferences window, Preview Size is displayed for example as 2880 px. Is the "Preview" the little image that is shown on the left of the screen, or the big one in the center ? Is 2880 px the result of a multilication, for example 72 x 40 ? In the Users's guide It is said that there may be a relation with the screen size. Mine is 1920 x 1080 =  2 073 600 px. What is the relation between 2880 (or 2560, or 2048 ...) and 2 073 600 ? One measure is pixels and the other one is pixels square.

    It's to do with with the display of the large center image.
    Just set it to your monitor's horizontal resolution ie 1920.
