Turning off Generating Previews?

Are you on version 14.3.1? I noticed a huge improvement after updating my iMac's OS X 10.15 to 11.5.2. However, this "improvement" only improved C1 to the way C1 14.2 was generating thumbnails. I don't know any way to stop the thumbnail generation.

I also found in some versions of C1 the same like you - although I knew the thumbnails already were generated after import and I didn't change the thumbnail size settings it happened (far too) often: C1 generated thumbnails over and over again after each new start. Same with "hardware acceleration", although nothing had changed inside the iMac.

I would not recommend you an update of your OS. It took a long time after I stepped into 11, and not because of C1 as I feel the developers not always respect Apple's software guidelines. Depending on what I want to do, unexpected things might occur.

I was looking for exactly this option. I have a MacBook Pro 16gb RAM / 2018, the issue is not the hardware or the version of the software... is the use case and the logic behind.

I understand this will make sense for MANY users, as I don't want to switch to a new folder for C1 to start auto generating the previews, then a switch to another folder and adds more files to generate previews... this is crazy, sometimes I just want to edit 1 image and I end up generating 170+ previews on the background and eating my whole processing power?

Please give us a feature to enable auto-generate previews. I want to trigger that manually and not by default.

    Real life scenario from today:
Imported 192 images, and I wanted to edit 2. I knew which 2 images to focus on... why just 2? because I just wanted to edit 2 really quick to send them over some friends and then i'll process the rest later... but C1 is eating up my RAM/Memory generating the previews for the other 190 images.

    Hi Joachim

I had 14.3.0 and am upgrading to the 14.3.1 now.  I guess I missed that update.  I do have a followup question about which Mac OS you think was better for C1 14.3.1?  C1 is the only program right now that I really need optimized performance from.  I shot tethered a lot on my old Mac Pro (2013 model) and the program is more sluggish and prone to quit since I upgraded.  I shoot really fast and push it to the limits.

I think I will ask this as a separate question on the forums, but interested in your thoughts as you mentioned it.

    Thanks

    Michael

    Kenneth,

If you know which 2 images you want to work on immediately just import those 2. Bring the rest in later.

During an import you should be able to work on images that have been imported without waiting for the full import to finish. You can use the search facility to find the images you want to work on if they are not likely to be imported early in the process.

Importing 190 images should not really take long but if you happen to be using a NAS or something that does not have as fast of a comms capability as an internal drive it may seem somewhat slower than you might like.

It is quite reasonable that C1 should utilize as much processor RAM as it needs but it will be balanced between the processes that are being run within C1 or amongst all of the processes that are active on your system.

Creating a preview is only usually a one-time exercise per import. Be sure the default preview size is well suited to the editing screen size you are using. The preview is the basic component of what you see when editing the images.

Kenneth, please "submit a request" to C1 (on this web page in the upper right corner) or create a post in the Feature Request topic of this forum, otherwise you will not be heard by C1.

The limits of an 8 year old MacBook might appear quickly. Sorry Michael, I don't have real experience with sessions or fast shooting or tethering, so I'll pass, but I would never suggest to run the newest version of software on 8 years old hardware.

It is valid to request the possibility to stop a queue. Especially if this queue starts without the explicit will of the user. Even queues which are started by the will of the user can be stopped (process batch queue).

It just makes sense that such a heavy calculation automatism can be brought under users control.
