DXO Nik Collection 4
I know this has be discussed in other posts.
Below is a copy of questions I asked DXO support.
My email below:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I downloaded a trial version of Nik Collection 4 about a week ago and I'm not game enough to install the software.
I have read within the Capture One Forum that some parts of the software are not compatible with Capture One. It has also been stated that version 3 of the Nik Collection works fine and also that you do not support Capture One.
Could you please comment.
Kind regards,
John
DXO support email below:
John,
No, our apologies, we have never supported the use of our software with Capture One.

I enjoy using DxO photo labs very much - and I never missed NIK tools there. I do have them in a standalone version, but except SilverEfex the rest of them didn't play any role in my edits. And even SilverEfex is not necessary for me anymore.
One way of workaround is: trying to do the things you'd use the NIK tools (alright, except the U-points) for in C1.

Had dealings with DXO about C1 not playing nice with NIK even though I have been using the older version for ever and continue to do so. Why C1 is doing this I don't know but dealing with the DXO people was a pleasant experience. If DXO was good I would have been more than happy to switch as I am looking for a product that does a little more.

Why C1 is doing this I don't know
C1 isn't "doing" anything - it's for DxO to make the plug-in C1 compatible; or for C1 users to accept that it isn't and they won't.

Keith why do you always have such a chip on your shoulder?

C1 supporys PS but I was trying to get away from the monthly plan so NIK kind off helped with tjat but for C1 not to support NIK when it supports a direct competitor like PS doesnt make much sense.

Mike,
How is PS a direct competitor to C1?
(Or, perhaps more pertinently given the scale of Adobe's operations and the reach they have long had in so many parts of the "graphics" market, how is C1 - primarily and RAW convertor with some DAM capability - a competitor for PS - NOT a RAW convertor in a standalone form and with no DAM capability.)

Lightroom?

A Lightroom comparison is closer in terms of functionality similarities.

Thats what I was getting at

DxO paid some money to buy NIK-tools from Google. I don't see the point why they would want to waste more money and resources to adapt their tools to competitor C1: Except of course, they would offer a very dedicated C1 version which can't be cross-financed from DxO customers.
Just to hear C1/NIK customers scream "why is that soooo expensive?" would be worth the fun. :D

This is a DxO Nik 4 issue with the rewritten apps Silver Effect Pro and Viveza all other Nik Collection apps still work with C1. Search 'Nik 4' on the community webpage and there are a number of posts from when Nik 4 was first released and you will find a number of workarounds for Mac, one for Windows, and a lot of frustrated customers. The issue is with DxO, apparently there are new developers that did not understand the relationship between Nik and C1 or On1 Photo Raw. The problem is Silver Effects Pro and Viveza are checking to see if Capture One is running and if so opens SEP or Viveza as a plugin app like is would if Photoshop or PhotoLab called the app. If DxO Photolab (any version) is already open the C1->SEP or Viveza work fine, clicking 'Apply' saves the tif file for C1, but Photolab must be running. If you open Silver Effects Pro and/or Viveza as a standalone app before opening Capture One, all works ok. The File->Save menuitem is displayed. Tried to convice DxO support to have the string 'Capture One' removed from the code but I guess this offended them and they refused to budge. I requested a refund and to have Nik 3 activation returned which they sent a link and activation code but they refused the refund until I disputed the charge with the bank and maybe because everytime i had a Nik 4 Collection ad placed on my Facebook timeline I would elborate on how DxO refuses to address the issues with Capture One and On1 Photo Raw.

DxO is in no way responsible to make their own products work with C1. Just show me any promise of DxO that NIK products will work with C1? NIK went to Google and after that to DxO
I don't discover "Capture One" in the compatibility list. So, it's your own wishful thinking, Gerald. As a standalone version NIK will work with TIFs from any application.

I am well aware that the Nik collection apps do not process raw files. Open Capture One first then open Nik 4 Silver effect pro or viveza as a stand alone and see if you can do a File-> Open. Silver Effects Pro and Viveza look for an instance of "Capture One" or 'On1 Photo' to see if it is running. Unless DxO has corrected the code recently if either C1 or On1 are running these two apps start as plugins. In previous versions they executed as standalone if an instance of C1 or On1 were running providing the File Menuitem, even PhotoLab would open them as a standalone. Only photoshop and now Photolab are supposed to open them as plugins. One of the workarounds was to change 'Capture One' to 'Capture_One' in the plist file on a Mac. If C1 is started as 'Capture_One' Silver Effects Pro and Viveza both are opened as standalone apps with the File->Save menuitem at the top otherwise SEP and Viveza open with NO File menuitem as it expects Photoshop or photolab to be the calling application. The rest of the Nik 4 collection still work fine with C1 and On1 at least until these are rewritten by the developers that do not understand how Nik interacts with C1. DxO is not responsible for making it work with C1 but they are making sure it does not work. Someone posted a portion of a hex dump of Nik 4 silver effects pro showing where the developers check for an instance of capture one and On1 Photo and call SEP and Viveza like Photoshop and Photolab, as a plugin. That is why if you have a copy of PhotoLab running when you Edit With from C1 to SEP, the Apply button works fine on a Mac. Another issue is if C1 or On1 Photo are running without Photolab running and you want to open SEP or Viveza as a standalone app, neither provide an File->Open menuitem as it checked for 'Capture One' and 'On1 Photo', so you cannot open an image to process yes I mean a tiff or jpeg. If you are running windows you will need to create a .bat file with a string that can be converted to a .exe file and added to C1's plugin list. Check the Nik 4 posts from around the first week of June if you need to build and exe file for windows. If you are running a mac check the workarounds posted.
I can't understand why DxO would want to alienate Capture One and ON1 Photo Raw users, I guess they do not need the business. I won't be purchasing any more updates, just phasing out DxO products from the workflow.

Gerald, to be honest: as I'm not a responsible person of DxO or C1, I actually see the row of your problems not as mine and I don't read you complaints. Especially not, since this lousy app someone calls a professional RAW converter (talking about C1) did crash 5 times during the last 12 hours, for various reasons and therefore proving it unstable, unreliable and rather poorly implemented. It stumbles over it's own functions, background processes go crazy and I consider my nerves as too good to waste on this rubbish.
I spend a couple of weeks work to digitize old negatives and I think today, C1 is the wrong place for them. And very probably also for the rest of my digital images. I need to reavaluate. My experiences with DxO are
- better than I expected in a couple of (to me) important aspects
- no crashes
- supporting some cameras I have and C1 didn't support 1 years after coming to market (now they do. what they call "supporting cameras" these days...)
- excellent support, opposite of what C1 performs...
So, I'm sorry to be biased in favour of DxO. And you had a 30 days trial period to see if DxO's development of NIK was too your like or not.
