Masking a person in an image

I am having trouble selecting an individual in an image.  I can do it, painstakingly, using manual masking, but auto masking seems not to work, even when there is high contrast between the figure and the background, i.e. pale skin and white hair against dark green bushes.  Are there any shortcuts or tools I am missing?  Auto mask works on a straight line or a horizon, but not with more complicated angles and contrasts.  Suggestions would be most welcome.

    Try this, using the mask brush (not the magic) draw a silhouette of the person, fill the inside of the mask and execute the option "Refine Mask ..."
