Importing scanned jpegs

I normally import images from a card. No problem. I've come across some old 80 year old photographs which I'm scanning as .jpeg's from my Macs desktop and I can't import them... I can see the files when Importing > Choose Source Folder, but when I click on the image... nothing. Any help/suggestions appreciated (Prefs do allow jpeg imports and I'm using Build 14.3.1.10)
