Two things you might try here:

    • Make sure there is a memory card inserted in the camera.
    • Kill the EOS utility software if its running. It may interfere with other software.

Piggy-backing on your thread as I need help desperately lol. Shooting a brand new Canon 5D Mark IV, brand new Mac Pro laptop with the latest Cap One and Cap is not recognizing the camera! The laptop does. I've tried all the usual: restarting, quitting, unplugging, refreshing, updating etc. I'm really baffled. Though my gear is all new I've been using the Mac + Canon + Cap One system for over a decade. I really need help and Phase one is slllloooowwww with their tech support so any ideas here would be highly appreciated.

    karen,

1.go to system report usb and see if the camera is connected.

    2. could it be that applephoto has catched the camera because of wrong camera settings ?

    3. does it work with Eos utility ?

    Hi, CSP,

For those of us who aren't so computer literate, what are the correct settings, and how do we find out if ApplePhoto is interfering?

  • Karen Epstein

As I mentioned Mac reads the camera, Capture One does not. I do not have apple photo running on my mac laptop. I never installed EOS utility as I only use Cap One.

photo connects to the camera and shows an import window,  at default apple photo connects to a camera when mass storage is selected in the camera.  for the correct camera settings please check the canon online help as it is a while that I have used  canon...

when something does not work it is always a good idea to check out the manufacturer software as c1 is not the most reliable software.

Lots of things to check/verify before tethering works.  For one thing Apple's security procedures make it hard for third party software to automatically connect to devices plugged into you computer.   You have to give it permission at least once.  If you missed the initial "can I connect" message the system remembers your "choice" and won't show it to you again.  Anyway...

    • capture one preferences, Capture Tab.  Is Canon checked?
    • capture one preferences, Update Tab.  Is your camera listed?  I use a Canon 7D and it listed there.  I don't know why.  But it is.  If it isn't I don't think Capture One ever saw the camera.
    • system preferences, Security and Privacy, Privacy Tab, Files and Folders.  Is Capture One mentioned?  On my system it is gray with the note Full Disk Access.
    • Camera configuration.  Does USB access use disk mode or some other access mode?  Swap between the mode for testing.

There's probably a bunch of other things you could look at, too.  The above is just what I could think of while writing this.

    Thanks, Marco:
    1)  Capture Tab - yes, Canon is checked
    2)  Update Tab - my second shooter's 7D Mark II is listed, but not my Canon 5D Mark IV.  How can I add my camera here?
    3)  Capture one is listed as Full Disk Access in Privacy / Files and Folders.  It is the same for Full Disk Access and shows Capture One 21 checked and Capture One 20 is unchecked.  I am currently using Capture One 21.

    4)  Camera Configuration - how do I check this?

    Thanks!

    4)  Camera Configuration - how do I check this?

The manual?  Some camera have different modes.  I don't know the 5DM4.

I think the camera uses USB 3.  Did it come with a cable?  Are you using that cable?

Mario Zimmermann recommended killing the EOS utility.   Before doing that I'd verify that the camera works with the EOS utility.  If canon software can't talk to canon hardware you've got issues that can't be addressed by Capture One.

Okay, everyone I have the answer, and please for the love of all that's holy share this with every Canon / Capture One user, cause the frustration on this was high, and the answer is super clever.

    1)  Canon 5D Mark IV has built in Wi-Fi functionality.
    2)  You need Canon's latest EOS Utility installed on your Mac.
    3)  Set up your 5D to connect wirelessly to your laptop.  You can find a video tutorial here, which I highly recommend:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peVFs0yFg4k)
    4)  Once you have it set up, set your camera to shoot in Raw + JPG
    5)  In EOS Utility, you can set it so that the JPG goes to the computer and the RAW goes to the memory card.  That way you can quickly preview the JPG to see composition, exposure, etc.  Then later pull in the RAW files when you have time
    6)  Set EOS Utility to open images in Capture One 21.
    7)  Set the folder you want the images to download to.
    8) In Capture 21, create a New Session, and select the folder you are downloading the images to as the Capture folder.

When you take a picture, it will download the JPG to your computer (I set mine to medium JPG resolution to make the transfer faster), save the RAW to your memory card, and pop up in Capture One in the Camera tab.

I've been playing with it for a couple of hours now, and it works flawlessly.  Bonus:  I don't need a tether cable, and I can walk away up to about 75 feet.  This works SO much better than having to manage a cable.

Many, many, many thanks to the guy at Canon Professional Services who walked me through this and helped me figure it out.

I am shocked and appalled at all these steps and that only digging this deep revealed them. As mentioned I've been using the Canon +Mac+ Cap system for over a decade and it's always been plug and play for the most basic function of shooting tethered. This is particularly problematic in wifi-compromised areas. I live in Brooklyn NY, not exactly no mans' land by any stretch but we have dead zones in our apartment where I sometimes shoot and today was an absolute sh*t show trying to capture. I am having a very hard time wrapping my head around the fact that we really have to do all this to shoot tethered including using the EOS utility which I have never used through 10 years of Canon EOS 5D'S......

Same, Karen.  I've spent the last 6 months trying to be patient hoping the next update would fix the issue.  I have a big client tomorrow who wants to view portraits as they are taken, so this was a last ditch effort to satisfy a request I could have easily fulfilled on my last computer.  I could understand that the issue wasn't fixed for a few months when the M1 came out, but now it's been over a year, and Apple has made it clear that the M1 is the way they are moving forward.  You would think that the major manufacturers and developers would have solved this issue by now or at least have it on the roadmap.  But here we are, and no solution forthcoming.  Canon Professional Services made it clear to me that, though they are aware of the issue, they have no plan to do anything about it.  The Wi-Fi route is their solution until the software developers catch up.

To that end, the camera is broadcasting the signal, so it shouldn't matter if you have wi-fi access.  As long as the camera and the computer are in range of each other (about 75 to 100 feet), they should talk to each other.

as the 5d4 is not really an exotic camera it surprises me how less you find about the problem when you google it. are you sure this is not already fixed with a firmware update ?

Wow Stephen that's crazy! Sounds like the 2 year nightmare we went through with Adobe from 2019-2021 begging them to fix multiple bugs on multiple version updates. Yesterday was my first shoot with the Mark IV and my excitement drained away as problem after problem arose. The camera and the computer were definitely NOT talking to each other, despite a direct cable connection. I ended up shooting to card half the time and it was so freaking confusing. CSP: I will look for a firmware update but again this is a brand new camera, bought it last week. I also wrote to Capture One tech support but of course have not heard back. they take forever which is really depressing. I just can't understand why there is not more news about this online. I did my research before purchasing the camera and this never ever came up. I have a lot of shoots very soon and I can't shoot to card, it's totally unacceptable. Oy vey....

karen, i was downloading software for my printer today and saw that there is a firmware released in summer which seem to address usb problems for your camera. it is not uncommon that you buy a new camera which does not have the latest firmware installed.

captureone is a company in decline no doubt about that.

Ah ok! I am updating my OS too, which apparently was not up to date. Thanks for the tip.

I work daily with 5d mkII and mkIV via tethertools cable. Capture One 21.
I have removed the EOS utility from my MacBook.
The tethertools cable is always connected to the tetherboost (and the charger is connected via a 230V socket)
Full access is selected in Mac OS preferences
    ALWAYS WITHOUT MEMORY CARDS
    Capture> Providers> Canon selected in C1 preferences
Both bodies work without any problems, delays, even in the iOS Cpture Pilot application

Ok I went to that youtube and another and I am on the verge of tears. This process is INSANE. It's clumsy, messy, confusing and I would be alright with that (barely) except that once you get it all hooked up your pictures take FOREVER to load on Cap One. Useless in most situations but utterly unprofessional in a studio with clients. I am furious! I will probably be returning this camera for a different version. I traded in my Mark 3 thinking I was upgrading and I don't understand how any professional photography company can think this is ok.

Hey Andy, I would love to not return my new camera! But I am at a loss what is the problem. I don't even want to shoot wifi, I am fine with tethered but I spent the entire day yesterday dealing with connectivity issues. Everything you listed is how I have my machines set up except for 2 things: because I am on a brand new Mac Book Pro there is not standard USB port, I started out using the tether cord that came boxed with the Mark IV but had to use a USB hub to connect to the laptop. This worked for about 5 minutes then kaput. I then purchased an amazon cable with the right ports and once again it worked for a hot minute then decided not to. Do you think it's the tethers? I know neither solution is ideal (and I will be buying a new tether tools cable asap) but seeing as all my EQ is brand new would these 2 cable options really be so dicey? Btw the Mac Book does recognize the camera, Cap One does not. Also what is a tether boost? I really appreciate your advice!

    Definitely it’s cable problem. Buy:
    https://tethertools.com/camera/canond-5d-mark-iv/?port=usbc
For me, this stuff solve all my tether problems. Tether boost amplifies the signal with longer cables (need if you have 1m or longer cable, I’ve 2x  4,6m tethertools cable)
    Finger crossed

be sure to uninstall eos utility and other Canon software. It usually bothers than helps

I did that immediately. The whole process put me in a rage lol.

Well folks Andy had it: tethertools cable and everything is working like a charm. I feel pretty stupid actually as this is one of those things that I know, like is it plugged in and try restarting yet my brain took the most convoluted path to figuring it out. Thank you Andy Rudiak!

    Upgrade Camera Software asap!

Va Memory Card works best and is incognito on set!

    Cheers!

As a follow up, I used the wireless method described above, and it worked like a dream.  I was able to shoot directly to Capture One and bypass using a wired cable method.  It was great not having a cable sticking out of my camera or creating a tripping hazard.  I was able to move freely around the location while the art director sat in her table reviewing images as they came up on the monitor.

Personally, I'm not fond of Tether Tools.  It's difficult for me to justify spending $60 - $100 for a $10 cable, especially for functionality that is supposed to work universally.

Finally, I think all of us have updated our camera firmware, Capture One software, Adobe software, computer drivers, and operating systems.  Thanks for the suggestion on that, and hopefully whatever the issue is between Apple and Capture One and Canon that it someday gets resolved.

Stephen, I just had the same issue with connecting a Canon 5Dmk4 to CI on a mac with Monterey. I'm glad you were able to sort the wireless solution out. Do you definitely have the latest Canon firmware installed? It sounds like you do but I wasn't sure. I'm just stuck what to do, as I need to be able to shoot RAW tethered. I have 2x brand new TetherTools cables and neither of them worked, nor did the Canon R5 I also tried to connect.

Also, for anyone who was able to resolve this error, is the general consensus here just to be sure the camera's firmware is up to date? (Other than uninstalling EOS Utility and using TT cables)

Okay, here's the full run down of my tech specs:

Canon 5D Mark IV firmware version 1.3.3 [Mac]
    Capture One 21 Build 14.4.1.16
    Mac OS 12.0.1 Monterey
    Apple MacBook Air 2020 M1 13" 8GB RAM 256GB SSD

To tether wireless to the Mac, I'm using Canon EOS 3 version 3.14.10 for MacOS - please note that when I started this thread, I had never previously installed this software.  It wasn't until I talked to Canon Professional Services and they taught me how to do the wireless work around that I installed this.  This software became the solution to my problem and made no difference on wired tethering before or after I installed it.

I will say that Capture One DOES recognize my Canon 7D Mark ii that I use primarily for video and as a second shooter camera on the same system.  This is what leads me to believe that the issue is unique to the 5D Mark iv.
