Similarities between Capture One and Media Pro?

Hello,

I've been a Media Pro user for many years, and absolutely LOVE the application for cataloguing my commercial portrait work, and as a tool for my clients to view their photos.  I'm using all iMacs, btw.  Is Capture One in any way similar to Media Pro for this type of use?  I use Photoshop CC for all of my image editing / retouching, etc., so I don't really need another app. for those operations.

    My feeling is that the DAM capabilities of Capture One are not as good as they were in Media Pro. I have been using Capture One for years (as a hobbyist not as a Pro), so I make what use I can of the cataloguing features. I had started using Media Pro, and it would work with Capture One images in sessions - so it was able to show images as adjusted. When they discontinued Media Pro I started using a Capture One catalog, so that I could easily find images from different times and places. It certainly works a bit differently from Media Pro, but you can do quite a lot with it. Have you watched any of the videos on the Capture One YouTube channel (or in the Resource Hub, accessed from the Help menu)? There are some about catalog organisation which will help show what it can and can't do.

    Thanks Ian.  Please excuse the dumb question, but what do you mean by DAM?

    Digital Asset Management. In other words, the features it has for cataloguing, organising, indexing and retrieving images. And not a dumb question!

    If you won't be using C1 (Capture One) for image editing, there are many other DAM applications for cataloging and opening images in PS from the catalog, Photo Mechanic PLUS comes to mind.

    However, behind many of them there is only a one-man show, and its future is uncertain. I am reluctant to go with a one man show application, though Phase One / Capture One is a bigger company but this was not a guarantee that MP won't be discontinued either.

    There are expensive commercial DAM solutions as well, even with team capabilities.

    Digikam is made by an open-source community (with all its advantages and disadvantages) and also available for Mac I think.

    I've no experience with either one as I stick with C1, currently. C1 continues to improve their catalog performance (which seems to be a limiting factor for some users), but the feature set hasn't improved much in the last years.
