Is it true that C1-22 HDR does not do de-ghosting?

    Yes, it's true.

CO HDR merging is stuck in 2010. For now.

Well, sorry, that's not true, I was getting better results with old versions of Photomatix in 2010.

Virtually every review I have, including several YouTube videos, show this clearly when there are moving objects in the field. Lightroom shows similar motion artifacts. Lightroom handles ghosting by blurring the ghosted artifacts, which creates its own problem. Panorama stitching would require better AI to make the artifacts disappear, but this would also produce artifacts, just more natural looking ones. Deghosting a panorama with moving clouds or leaves or surf is more complex than removing an object that is in one image, but not ion others in the series.

There are other shortcomings of a similar nature related to HDR images with moving objects. Unless you can take all of the images simultaneously, motion artifacts have to be dealt with. Capture One is not the best for this and has work to do in making the artifacts look less obvious.

The paradox for Capture One is it has some new features that fill the demands of a lot of folks, but are not perfected. They could leave them out and not compete, or put them in and work to perfect the new tools though point releases. They chose the latter, probably because the less obvious improvements would not justify an upgrade and produce revenue.

You could reasonably argue as a landscape photographer that the motion artifacts seriously weaken the key reasons for buying version 22, but if you are shooting images where everything stays still, you might see it differently. If you are a wildlife photographer, HDR and Panorama tools would rarely be usable. If you need to shoot untethered in a studio and own some Canon or Phase One cameras, version 22 might be of value with that, alone.

So, it's a beta version if you really need near perfect looking Panorama or HDR images. If you want HDR and Panorama tools even if imperfect, it's much more than a point release. If you were primarily waiting for Metal support for Intel Macs, it's disappointing and not worth the upgrade price.

I want HDR and Panorama tools when they are as good as the competitions, and I want Metal support for my Intel Mac (until I get an M1 Mac), so I will probably wait until I see these. Regardless Capture One often substantially discounts the latest version around mid year. By then, point releases will allow you to see if problems are mitigated, performance improvements justify upgrading, or if you want to stay with version 21 a while longer.

So, I will continue using Aurora HDR for handling multi-exposure merging. I have found it’s de-ghosting to be very good.

My next question is whether there are valid reasons not to install v22 at this time. Any nasty bugs that need fixing?

I don't know about new bugs, but conversely what improvements are there is C1 22, excluding HDR, Pano, and untethering that are worth upgrading?

Jerry, I hear you, but I had pre-ordered v22, so I might as well use it, but only if I have won't have to deal with aggravating bugs. If I had it to do over again, I would not have pre-ordered, but ultimately, I expect Capture One 22 will get past the beta stage and will provide some useful new features. Fingers crossed.

I just watched David Grove's intro to Capture One 22 in which he acknowledged the need for de-ghosting and said that he expects it to be forthcoming in a future update. Patience, my friends.

i´m really surprised what user think is acceptable when it comes to software nowadays. can you imagine buying a car and than get told that they are aware of a problem so you should not drive your car in the dark because the engineers did not finish the headlights but we will update it somewhere in the future ?

so more than 20 years after pano & HDR  software became available c1 is not able to deliver a useable version even on an amateur level and this is somehow ok ?  or to heavy promote a feature which is actually only available for 3 cameras and 3 others primarily ?

    Why are you still, CSP?

Last time I checked, this forum wasn't set up as a platform for your interminable, tedious, predictable whining.

CSP or anyone else is free to post in this forum, and some of his criticisms are valid. But I wonder why he bothers. If he hates C1, then presumably he no longer uses it. Maybe he just enjoys annoying those of us who prefer living in darkness (as he sees it). As an amateur enthusiast and a relative newcomer to C1, I truly love the elegant and efficient user interface. No other editor that I have tested or used (and there have been many) even comes close. Also, C1 is delivering the best results that I have ever gotten. If Lightroom or DxO have neat features that C1 lacks, I will live without them and not spend a moment bemoaning their absence. When my work requires such features, I know where I can find them elsewhere.

    Thank you Robert Goldstein.

Well observed (in my opinion) and eloquently presented.

It's Keith's pastime he has annoyed the heck out of people for years on other forums also.
