C1 15.0.0.192 slow with external monitor
Hi, I'm running Capture One 15.0.0.192 on a Macbook Pro 16" 2021 (32GB RAM, M1 Max Processor) and MacOS 12.0.1.
An LG Ultrafine 5K Monitor is connected via Thunderbolt.
When I display C1 on the Macbooks internal Monitor, everthing runs smoothly. However, when running C1 on the external 5K monitor, there is a 2 or 3 sec delay between changing a setting (e.g. exposure) and having the change displayed.
I already tried rebuilding the previews.
What can I do?
I had the exactly same problem with v14.4.1.16, btw.
Als, I opened a support request with Capture One over two weeks ago, but never got an answer...
thanks,
Gebhard

While I can't give you specific recommendations (I'm using Intel based machines), here are a couple of thoughts:
1. What size previews do you have? The C1 recommendation is 5120 pxl for 5k monitors. The default 2560 pxl preview works fine for 2k monitors, but when you zoom on your monitor, C1 will have to calculate a larger preview, which could take a second or more.
2. M1 machines have a different GPU environment than Intel machines. That plus C1 using Metal on M1 Macs (they still don't implement Metal on Intel based Macs, which many people have complained about) could be an issue.
3. The higher resolution of your 5k monitor could take longer for the computer to process.

I have the same problems with an external 4k monitor.
All previews are created with 3,840px.
With C1 / 20 I didn't have this problem on my M1 MacBook.
C1 is the only image-editing-program that shows this behavior.I've already written to support - I didn't get an answer.

I have now reinstalled C1 / 20 on my MacBook-M1.
I was able to install both versions (20 and 22) in parallel.
C1 / 20 runs much faster and smoother than C1 / 22.
Something went wrong when converting the Mac software to the M1 processor!

If the hardware-acceleration is switched off, C1/22 is slightly faster.
Even then, C1/22 is still significantly slower than C1/20 (although it shows that the hardware-acceleration does not work)

I have the same problem using my 4K Monitor as well with the MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, 32GB)
When changing the size of the image in the C1 viewer on the external monitor it starts running smoothly, the problem appears when I'm opening C1 in full view in the external monitor.
But let's face the truth the reason I'm using the external monitor is to have bigger view!Has anyone got any response from the support, will they fix that with the next update or so?

did you have these problems with c1/20 or C1/21?
I have not yet received a response from support

I finally got a response from C1 support, they basically claim that my Macbook Pro 16" 2021 (32GB RAM, M1 Max Processor) GPU is not powerful enough for supporting an external 5k monitor:
Hi Gebhard,
Note that a 4k/5k system requires a powerful GPU with 8GB of video RAM (Minimum system requirements to run Capture One). Moreover, Macs are still incompatible with multiple/dual-monitor setups - that is to say, they can technically run on a dual-monitor setup, but only the primary display will be working without any significant dropouts.
Check the preview size in Preferences, Image tab - it should match your Viewer on-screen size, which is approximately 80% of your resolution in width, so if you’re at 5120 × 2880 try using 3840–5120, depending on your workspace layout.
After changing the preview size, right-click the images in the Browser and select Regenerate Previews.
This should have some performance impact.Also try disabling Hardware Acceleration, as relying on a slow GPU could lead to a slowdown:
- go to Preferences - General tab;
- scroll down to Hardware Acceleration;
- set Display/Processing to Never;
- restart Capture One.If you see no reasonable difference in performance, it would be helpful if you could provide us with a screen recording showing how the app performs with different preview sizes, on a single 4k/5k screen, with and without hardware acceleration.
The best way to do this in macOS is to use QuickTime player.As well as this, collect a fresh pack of logs right after the screen recording: How to retrieve logs?
I will need all this data for the R&D report.

this is all nonsense!
C1/20 runs without problems on an external 4k- or 5k-display with identical hardware!
No other software shows this problems!0 -
I have the same experience

I found the solution to the problem. (for my hardware).
I have a 27 inch, 4k monitor that displays 3840x2160px. But the presentation of the menus and tools was too small for me. That's why I chose a scaled resolution (3008x1692) for the display in the system-settings. The monitor still has its native resolution of 3840x2160px (the images are displayed in this resolution) - but the menus and tools are displayed larger. This makes it easier for me to read menus and tools.
But - if I set a different scaling (2560x1440px or 3840x2160px) C1 / 22 has no problems with the display. The images are displayed sharply very quickly - changes to the controls of the tools are immediately visible.
So I found a solution to this problem for myself.
PS: other programs (Lightroom, Photoshop, DxO-Photolab, DavinciResolve) do not have this display problem.1 -
I'm also having this issue, 2019 intel Macbook pro with a 32" 4k LG display.
Capture one 20 runs perfectly smooth on my macbook display, but is laggy on the external display. Adjusting the display scaling back to default 3840x2160px seems to fix the issue, however unlike Fred above, 2560x1440px is still slow.
Unfortunately running the scaling this small makes things very hard to read, so I guess I'll be switching the scaling back and forth every time I want to use C1 on this monitor. Frustrating.

Here is the latest response I got from C1 support:
As it stands, Macs are still incompatible with multiple/dual-monitor setups - that is to say, they can technically run on a dual-monitor setup, but only the primary display will be working without any significant dropouts.
This is something which doesn't depend on the way Capture One is crafted, although we are doing our best to improve the performance.So, they still claim that it's Apples fault, despite other programs like Photoshop are not showing the same issue.

C1 / 20pro (Version 13) runs smoothly and quickly on M1-Macs. This version was compiled by Rosetta onto the M1 processor!
