I am using a Mac (catalogs) and I can find the resulting HDR pano ".dng" at the bottom of the "stack" in the catalog that contains the original images

Can you specify "stack" a bit further? Are the source file of your HDR in an album within the catalog and are you triggerig the HDR from that album and the resulting HDR is also added to the album automatically? Or do you trigger your HDR out of a folder? Out of a folder it works fine...the resulting HDR or Pano is in the folder. But it is not automatically added to an album. I prefer using albums to organize my pictures within a catalog. That is why I would love to see the resulting HRD or pano dng being automatically added to the album from where I triggered the HDR/pano creation.

For further clarification: I am using a Windows machine - maybe it is something specific for the windows version and working fine on Mac version?

I use a catalog structure and within the catalog I have folders organized by the photo shoot date. Within a specific date, I may have a hundred or so images. When I select the date, I click on the desired HDR input images and select Image > Merge to HDR.  The activity bar counts down and I get a pop-up window that says HDR Merge Complete and then I go back to  Image > Stitch to panorama, more count down and I get another alert that tells me that the stitch is complete.  Then I scroll down within the date folder and I can see the .dng pano.

I am not pleased with the image quality, but the process is painless.

    I hope this explanation helps
