Wishlist and UI issues?
Hey everyone. I'm a Canon Explorer of Light and a working concert / action / portrait photographer. I also have a show on the Adorama YouTube channel called "Ask David Bergman." I was a member of the Aperture Advisory Board and switched to Capture One when Apple dropped support for Aperture. I held on as long as I could, but went "cold turkey" and made the switch to C1 at the beginning of 2020.
I've been overall very happy with C1! Best raw conversions short of the OEM software. I've been compiling a wishlist of items that don't work the way I'd expect. I contacted support directly and they suggested I post on here. A few of these might simply be user error, as I'm still thinking back to my workflow in Aperture. Others are just minor UI issues as I think things can be done with fewer clicks. So if any of you can help me out with some of the items below, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, commit below if these are things that bug you as well and maybe we can get the engineers to make a few small updates.
For reference, I am using the latest version 22 (15.0.0.192) on a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max chip, but these issues have existed since v21 on my old MBP as well.
- Ability to select multiple folders/albums/groups, etc (using Mac standard command or shift keys). Sometimes, I'd like to look at two or three folders of images at once. And then maybe select all the 4-star images from those selected albums, for example. I don't know of a way to do that now.
- When clicking IMPORT - I'd like the folder selection dialog to automatically come up since I always import from somewhere different, but don't change any other settings. Maybe a preference setting to do that or stay as it is now.
- “Select collection after creation” check box should be sticky. I personally always want this on, but it should just stay however I selected it last. It's currently de-activated every time, regardless of last use.
- Option to ALWAYS sort by name so new projects/albums go where they should as soon as I add them into a group. Also, the ability to sort top level groups by name as well would be nice.
- Select multiple star ratings at once in the filter box (show me 3 star and 4 star images, for example)
- Brush away vignette AND move the center of vignette. For speed, I prefer to use the vignette and just brush it out of faces or move it around instead of drawing a mask on a layer. This one is all about speed. Why can't I put vignette on a layer yet?
- Highlight and select/copy text in caption and metadata (filename, EXIF data, etc). Sometimes I need to copy exif data to external programs like social media, but I can't select the lens name, for example.
- In the quick search star ratings - add option for “no stars only"
- Edit with plugin - sometimes the new TIFFs don’t keep the star rating of the original raw when they are created (before the round trip). Also, occasionally, C1 doesn't automatically open the plug-in (Silver Efex Pro in my case), so I have to highlight all the new TIFFs it just created and then "open with." This behavior is inconsistent, so not sure I can replicate it.
- This one is harder to describe, but is a huge issue for me in my workflow. When I do my b&w conversions using Silver Efex Pro, I temporarily give the images I'm considering 5 star ratings (since I don't use 5 stars for anything else). Then I select all my five stars and "edit with" SEP. After I make the b&w versions, I have two of each - the original color raw, and the new b&w tiff. Then I go through and pick whether I like the color or b&w better. For the ones that I prefer color, I command-delete the black and white, TIFF versions. They go away. But then, at any time in the future, if I create a smart album to find all my 5-star images, those b&w's that I deleted show up in the smart album! They do not appear in the individual album, and the trash has been emptied. I don't know where those files are coming from and why they're not deleting. Happy to go into this more if someone wants to help me troubleshoot.
So those are my thoughts / issues. Thanks for reading!
David

Hi David
- Select multiple star ratings at once in the filter box (show me 3 star and 4 star images, for example)
I can select multiple criteria (eg: green tag plus 3 or 4 stars) by holding down the Command key when selecting the relevant criteria.

Perfect! Not sure how I didn't think of trying that, thanks.

- Ability to select multiple folders
+1
Lr had this since the beta back in 2006... very useful. should be added just for usability consistency.

to your last point: Try deleting with CRTL+CMD+DEL. that will throw the panels shown so you may make your deletion choice, which as I understand it is to permanently delete the less-useful images.
Works in both browser and edit modes.
In Browser mode Shift+Click to select contiguous items, or CMD+Click to select discontiguous items.

Thanks! Found it - it's actually SHIFT+CMD+DEL, which is "delete from disk." Apparently, just deleting only moves the image to the "catalog trash." I read the documentation on catalog trash on the C1 site and still can't wrap my brain around it. In my case, I'm creating a second version of the original image - a b&w tiff. If I don't like it, I want to just delete it forever. Obviously, I don't want to delete to original, raw color image. I suppose I'll just use "delete from disk" from now on - hopefully it won't touch the original.
But also, for my existing catalog, how do I see and delete the b&w tiff images that are already in the catalog trash? The "empty catalog trash" menu item is greyed out no matter what I do or select. FYI - the "trash" under catalog collections is empty. But all those b&w's still show up in my 4-star smart album. I'd rather not delete them one by one because there are many of them spread throughout the year. Thanks.
