If your SD card is in the camera it can prohibit tethering.

If the memory card in the camera the connection to the computer will be interpreted as a "Storage device" instantly and give no time for C1 to connect it as a "Tethered device". The "Storage device" software will always win the race.

In many more recent cameras, the manufacturers have provided multiple ways to connect to other devices, and using an appropriate method can overcome the problem and, in some cases as I understand things, allow the camera to operate as a tethered device while retaining the ability to be a storage device at the same time. In other words there is no need to remove the card(s) and, maybe, it is possible to write to the card as images are captured in some types of tethered usage.

Unfortunately, the 5D3 will not offer that functionality being the age it is. But some of the new Canon bodies may do so.
