Capture One tethered Fuji GFX 100
Does the tethered shooting through Capture One with my GFX work the same as shooting tethered with EOS Utility? That is, does it do live view and allow camera settings to be changed at the computer, plus triggering the shutter from the computer?
-
Yes, it works basically the same. Although there is one significant problem. Keeping the camera connected to Capture One is something I struggle with all day, 5 days a week. A TetherTools Block will help keep the USB cable in the port, but there is still something along the line that makes the connection fail. I can't find a resolve with FUJI nor C1. No one seems to know how to fix it. When the connection is lost, you will have to unplug from your camera and computer, close and restart Capture One, then re-plug in until the connection is restored. Sometime this will have to be done multiple times, and on other occasions, you will need to restart your computer.

Hi Gerald, I currently use a GFX100s and MBPro 14inch. Tethertools 1ft USB C-C cables and I never have drop in connection. I used a lot with my D850 and 17 inch 2013 laptop. I believe it is something to do with the power output from the USB 3 hub. Tether Tools on their site has an article about this, hence the need for a Booster device. Since using USB C and moreover Thunderbolt ports to tether - up to several feet, I haven't had any issues with drop in connection. Am using C1 Pro 22. Hope this helps

Hi there together, I am using the GFX100 together first with C1-12 now with C1-22. I had the same Problems like Gerald. And like you say Gerald, 24/7. We were using TetherdTools Cables, sometimes I used the unit with extra Power with the additional power through another connection to the power grid. But it seemed to me that this made things even more problematic.
But when the camera is connected, you can adjust all settings on the camera via the C1 software, there were never any problems.

And I was using a 7 year old MacPro. Now my new MacBook Pro M1 Max 64 GB arrived. But it is impossible for me to get the GFX connected to Capture One.

Kitmin, thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I've tried the TetherBoost and it unfortunately doesn't resolve this connectivity issue. I know that the MacOS update a couple years back really disrupted Capture One's tethering, and it has not really worked the same since. My EOS system works lightning fast and stays connected. I've talked with C1, FUJI and TetherTools and they all echo similar points–– the problem isn't with their product and it must be a problem with the others.
Kai, good to know. These companies (all of them) rush products out that are not fully scenario tested or ready for professional daily use, so I stopped upgrading so fast. I waited a couples of years on the GFX and I'm sticking with C1 21 because 22 felt like a step backwards. I love all of their products, I just wish they were more stable and properly working before release.

Gerald, I´m not really sure if C1 is to blame. I had big issues with my G-Speed Raid. My Computer retailer said tha t Apple has massively tightened the security settings, so the raid no longer mounts. They have moved their limits. With a rather complex installation, a driver had to be installed, now the Raidmounted on the new MacBook.

But I bought the new computer to shoot tethered reasonably. I just can't get it to work.

Kia, you're right about the Apple security update. I remember having to downgrade my OS after updating because mounting and connectivity was greatly disrupted. Although, to be fair, I also remember C1 telling me the Apple OS security update came as a surprise to them and they would need time to resolve the issues. If it is in-fact the Apple security issue inhibiting my GFX to stay connected to C1, 2 years seems like a long time to have not fixed the issue. Especially when my other systems and drives work well. If I had to guess, FUJI and C1 just don't play well together. I can't and don't want to comment on inherent blame, I can only report my experiences.

Hi Gerald - I did also buy the Tetherbooster for my D850 connected to a 17 inch MBP, it was so unstable I gave up using the tethertool cable. But when i changed to a much shorter cable (non-brand) the tethering was much more stable.
Hi Kai, I am using the latest 14inch MBP fully spec'd and GFX100s, with the 0.8m to over 3m lengths of USB c-c cables, and haven't had any drop in connection. Am using C1 Pro 22. Monterey. GFX100s firmware is up to date. It is odd you can't get connection with your M1 MBP. I didn't do anything regarding the set up of the 2022 MBP for tethering. And I didn't need to install any fujifilm software. It just worked. May I suggest you try a different cable. Also the GFX setting - the spanner (set up), connection setting, connection mode, mine is set to USB tethering shooting auto.

Try a different USB-port on your Mac. Some ports can provide more power than others, at least on older Macbooks like my 2015 MBP. Not sure about newer M1's with USB-C, mine hasn't given me problems so far shooting tethered.
Another thing you absolutely need to test is your USB cable. Try a brand new one, see if that makes a difference. You need a backup cable anyway.
Camera settings for my GFX100s:
Menu > 🔧 (spanner) > Power Management: auto power: OFF
Menu > 🔧 (spanner) > Power Management: Shooting stand by mode: OFF
Menu > 🔧 (spanner) > Power Management: auto power save: OFF
Menu > 🔧 (spanner) > Connection Setting: usb power supply setting: OFF ('ON' may draw too much power over the cable making you data connection unstable)

Thank you Jeroen, the Cable was ok, I switched back to my old MacPro and everything worked out. And I have backup cables in storage.
I found the problem in the mean time, it was the adapter from USB-A to USB-C. I first tried a new good one but it did not work eather. Ataching the USB-A cable to the Eizo Display brought the camera into Capture 1. So I bought a USB-C to USB-C cable from Area51 and go directly into the Macbook. It works!

Hi,
Some points from my side. Working 2times with a GFX100 and C1 21 if got a reasonable connection with a 5ft usb c-a cable. Before the Fuji I worked with a IQ4, a D850 and a Sony A7R3, that was a dream, TT-Cable to an active USB-Hub with 30 ft if got a stable connection over 45ft. Camera is mounted in a height of 27ft...
With the GFX100 I was unable to get a connection with a cable longer than 5ft, but with using TeamViewer it was workable.
The last 2 days I used the configuration with C1 22 and it was terrible. One small vibration and the connection was broken, and it was only possible to use the Liveview before 1 captured the first shoot. Also I noticed that after 1 shoot I had a delay of about 20 seconds for the shoot and additional 60-90 seconds for the transfer to C1. The only help for me was to restart C1. I tried 3 different computers and 5 different cables, USB c-a with TT, USB 3.2, USB 2 and C-C as USB 3.2 an lightning. Always the same result. And very strange the camera port worked only in one direction.
Unfortunately I was unable to test the configuration with C1 20 or 21. But last year the problems were not as terrible as today.0 -
I use 15ft *angled* TetherTools cables. Never had connection problems (d810, xt4, gfx50, gfx100s), but I think my https://www.arca-shop.de/en/l-brackets/l-brackets-for-cameras/200/classic-l-bracket helps a lot to secure a stable connection with hardly any play on the cable.

I have the same issue with my GFX100 connecting with Capture One 22.
Every time I use live view mode in CaptureOne, the camera will die immediately..

Hello all
I post similar problem with tethering on GFX100s topic 6 months ago. Im planing to sell my 100s and buy new 100 ii the main reason will be tethering as its impossible to work.
My question in this group is; does someone try on new 100 ii tethering. Does it work smoothly? I try to get some info from the release update on this matter but unfortunately couldn’t find anything. Maybe someone from here have hands on new GFX model and can give some first hand test review on tethering.

I had big problems with tethering the GFX100.
What helped me the most was using a different cable. I had used theather tools, as I think most people do. After using a different cable, the problems largely disappeared. When the camera doesn't show up, it's enough to turn the camera on and off, or unplug the cable and then plug it back in. With the new cable, transfer rates up to 10Gbit/s are achieved. That makes the difference.
Unfortunately, I can't tell you the brand, but this is the one I bought (In fact, I even use a version with 10 meters, without problems):https://www.muc.ksrent.de/index.php/de/product/39678

for those of you still wondering - I'm testing the GFX 100II body tethered this weekend - connection drops constantly and irregularly with C1 23 (16.3.1) and my 2018 MBP running current version Ventura 13.6. I've tried using three cables (all USB C to C, I don't have an RJ45 to USB C to test), including a brand new TetherTools 15' that I keep as a backup. I've tried all four ports in my MBP to see if there's a power issue in one of them, but they all do it. No issues with any of these three cables or ports with the XF. Also FWIW I tried testing the auto bracket feature on GFX and when capturing from C1 you only get the first exposure. Focus stacking also gets you only the first capture.
Capture One support, are you listening? Please get the Fuji GFX support functioning. Thank you!

Hey Jason, I am very sorry about that. I can only repeat that it has worked really well for me since I switched to a different cable. The camera is not there immediately, but as soon as you unplug the cable from the camera and then plug it back in, it is there. And it stays there all day, unless you switch it off.
However, this is the GFX100 together with:
- MacbookPro M1 Max 10Core CPU 32Core GPU 16-Core NE, 64GB
- with the cable as written 2 months agoI would be interested to see how it would run with a newer Macbook, do you have the possibility to borrow one from someone?

@joerg: 5m is too long for me when working from a tripod. Please consider to produce shorter length cables (1,5 - 2m) and I'll buy. Thanks!
