More complete answer: Capture One never touches the original files. Your adjustments are automatically saved—think of it as a recipe—to the catalog/session database that you never directly access. The program automatically saves every step you do, including when you navigate among your images.
If you Export an image, C1 processes the image per your Export Recipe and gives you a JPEG/TIFF/etc. file that incorporates your edits.
If you want to share your specific edits with someone else (or transfer them to another catalog/session), you'd Export with adjustments. This is all described well in Capture One's documentation and also in David Grover's excellent YouTube tutorials.

OK. I have tried to export an image but I get the following message:
The selected recipe will not be used for exporting because it is not enabled.
