Renaming – what token will keep the original file name's 4 digit counter?
When renaming files, if you want to keep the 4 digit sequence from the original file name, what token do you need to use?

I never do such operations in C1. Again (and of course) that is Photo Mechanic territory.

Hi Thomas,
you can't! The EXIF record "Image Number" is not represented in C1 (and PM too). You can use exiftool to rename files and preserve the sequence number.

Hi Kassur,
Photo Mechanic has {filenamebase:-[x]} which will keep part of the original file name.

If you have file names on the pattern of DSC_9059.NEF, you could use the Find and replace option in the batch rename tool to replace part of the name with something else, like this.
That's not a perfect solution of course as you can't use tokens in the Find and replace option.
You could get round that with a slightly more long-winded process.
(1) Batch rename using Text and Tokens, including the File Name token. So if you used
[Date]_[Job Name]_[File Name], for example, then DSC_9059.NEF could become
2022-06-03_Wedding_DSC_9059.NEF.
(2) Then use Batch Rename again with the Find and Replace option, to replace DSC_ with nothing, to give you
2022-06-03_Wedding_9059.NEF.
In a session, at least, batch rename is very quick, so this is not as bad as it sounds, and you can save formats like [Date]_[Job Name]_[File Name] and reuse them another time.

Hi Thomas,
thanks for the hint!

Thanks, Ian!
That's a very useful workaround.

Reset the Renaming Counter to the same number as the first image selected for renaming. File->Rename Counter-> Set Counter and enter the the numeric part of the image name. E.G. _DSC1088 thru _DSC1100 reset counter to 1088 and set image rename to <text> or whatever you need and 4digit counter token. This will rename the images with the counter 1088 -1100. The renamed example in the image renaming dialog box shows the current number when the numeric counter token is added to the rename field

What happens if one image file, say <old>_1091.nef is missing in the sequence? Will <old>_1092.nef change to <new>_1092.nef or to <new>_1091.nef?

That thought occured after I submitted the suggestion. This technique is only good for consectutive image numbers, selecting those in sequence and setting the counter each time if you have a break in the numbering will be required. The good news is the batch rename dialog box maintains all of the information so you would need to select consecutively number images after setting the counter. Not the most efficient process but my guess is the image name is not stored in separate fields by text and number.
On1 Photo Raw has a token 'File Number Suffix' which is the camera's file sequence number. Rename files or Exporting files and keeping the original image number is possible. Maybe C1 will add a token to the collection to field the image number. I did not see any existing tokens in C1 that contins the image number. Has anyone found one?

Tried Find and Replace and it appears to be the best option. Replacing "_DSC" with some text works well!

Added info to previous post. On1 Photo Raw fields the image number as 'File Number Suffix' token which can be used for export or rename maintaining the image number. I could not find anything similar in C1. Submit a request to C1?

I’ve submitted a request here: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/5386321578525/comments/5410823534365

It would be really great if Capture one would include this token. We have been able to do this in lightroom since it was released. This makes me really sad.

Yet another frustration of C1...Lightroom keeps the original file name in the metadata tab regardless of how many times you change it. Also stops re-import of the same file rather than creating dupes. Im starting to wonder if I should use other programs for DAM and just output with C1
