I have found a resolution to my problem and leave this update in hopes that anyone else who is seeing a similar issue may benefit as there appears to be no documentation anywhere (that I've found) that addresses this issue.

As mentioned above, as part of the activation process, a request is made to one's local machine after logging in at 'https://id.captureone.com/...'  Using in-browser debugging I noticed that there are actually two localhost requests:  First, to a HTTP URL and then second, a redirect to a HTTPS URL.    For some reason, my default browser at the time, MS Edge, was not able to negotiate this redirect.  After many dead-ends, and on a whim, I changed the default browser to Chrome, tried the whole process again, and was surprised and relieved when Chrome was able to negotiate this particular step and I was finally able to use the software after a successful activation.

Hopefully this info can help someone else.

I noticed the same thing with Firefox and Edge and curiously, I resolved it just by signing-in at first in the web capture one portal and leaving the web browser opened it could communicate with CaptureOne app to update license and so on. No way to install Chrome or other complicated manipulation but it's true that Captureone should review this for a better understanding and more easy process !
