Changing default crop settings
Hi folks,
not sure what has happened, but all of a sudden my default crop settings have changed and I cannot find anyway of changing from 'original' to 'unconstrained'.
Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

The former version of 15.3 didn't let any choice and the default was "original". With the last one, just released a few days ago (15.3.1) you can choose between the two options ("original" and "unconstrained") in the Capture One crop preferences.

Thank you, I am aware of those settings, but I won't to change the default to unconstrained, which in previous was the default.

If you choose the new setting in Preferences for Always Use Global Aspect Ratio, then on the Crop tool on the toolbar and set it to Unconstrained, you should find that for any image it selects it will start on Unconstrained, and a quick test I did just now showed that this persists even after a restart.
(Of course, if you then change any image to a different aspect ratio, such as 4x5, the global aspect ratio will be changed and you will find each image starting with it set to 4x5. But this is exactly the same as the behaviour before 15.3, I think.)
If you'd like every image to start at Unconstrained, and that not to be altered if you change an individual image to a different ratio, then you could do the following.
- Set the Preferences to the other option (Use Variant Aspect Ratio).
- Select all the images and choose Unconstrained from the toolbar crop tool.
- Now you should find that all of them are Unconstrained, and changing one of them won't change the global setting. This may be what you want, but it isn't what used to happened before 15.3.
If you want to have this more automated, you could try creating a custom style that does nothing but set the crop to Unconstrained, then have Capture One apply that style on import.

that function no longer works in v23, the setting does not appear to stick when changing dates.

Dates in the photo library selection. So I can edit a different image.

I'm not sure why that would affect it. Do you have the crop preference set to variant or global?

Hi Ian,
I tried using the use global aspect ratio and it keeps the crop setting at unconstrained, after rester and changing days within the library.

This is very poor implementation.
Surely it makes sense to have a setting which allows a user, like me, to ALWAYS use unconstrained cropping - without having to jump through hoops... Very bad IMO.

But you can do that. All you have to do is
(1) choose global in the options shown in my earlier response
(2) change the aspect ratio in any image to Unconstrained, and all other images will use unconstrained until you change one again to a fixed ratio.

Ian, but I will have to do that with every session of new photos! This should be a setting which you never have to deal with again, not do a work-around each time you have more photos to process.

Ian, I take that back... It seems once you change it in settings, then change one photo to Unconstrained, it does stay that way for following photos... great, thanks!
