DNG Files muddy!
Hi All
I have a load of photos taken on a Ricoh GRiiix.
Following import i thought i had basically poorly shot/exposed them. I have spent hours trying to recover some of them... then out of curiosity i opened one in Affinity photo and low and behold the are sharp and in focus. I looked at the jpeg versions i have and they are sharp too. The attached sample image is an unedited dng & jpg side by side. the DNG is the one that looks like it was taken in the 1980's!
Is there a known issue with DNG files? Any solution?
I am not a happy bunny!
Thanks
Neil.

Yeah I thought they supported it but maybe they haven't caught up yet. I get in touch with them directly.
Thanks for your help.

Understandable. Martin Tolley does make a good point though.
It is pure speculation on my side, but C1 may be showing you the jpeg preview image embedded in the dng. If Ricoh embeds a low resolution preview, like Sony does, images may look soft. Affinity likely develops the dng image and shows you the result.
I would not expect C1 to allow you to edit those dngs, but I have no way of testing it.
There is a youtube video Making Ricoh GRiiix Files Work in Capture One . You may want to locate and watch it. I will not include a link because I believe the forum auto-moderating software would then block this post awaiting manual of approval, and the forum admin is apparently on a long term leave...
The video shows how to use exiftool to modify the camera ID embedded in the image file to read "RICOH GR III" to trick C1 into working the file as if it originated from that older and supported camera model.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think they are previews, so are rendering OK, and you are able to edit them. I have come across that work around too so will look into this I think. Others are having success with it.
Cheers!

If the camera isn't supported, C1 is probably just opening the dng but not applying any adjustments. Try pressing the auto levels button and you will probably see a big improvement :-) Also check if any sharpening is being applied?

C1 supports generic DNG files. As a result, it does not matter whether C1 already supports a new camera. As long as the latter produces valid DNG files, one can edit them in C1.
The only thing one misses out on are C1-specific camera profiles. Judging from my experience with camera profiles for Pentax, though, these are nothing to write home about. I suspect that Capture One puts in more work for camera profiles for the big brands; I wouldn't expect any remarkable profiles for Ricoh.
