I've got an Intuos Pro Medium for home use and carry a Small on the road. Both work great.

Can I use an iPad with an Apple pencil to achieve the same thing ... and also see the image on the Mac screen as well as the iPad?

No, an iPad will not substitute for a tablet… there simply is no equivalent functionality (I wish there were).

I also highly recommend the Wacom Intuos Medium tablet—it’s the perfect size and it gives excellent control when creating masks. You will not regret getting the Wacom.

    Jill,

You may be able to save quite a bit of money buying a refurbished Wacom Intuos Medium Tablet. I bought one that way and the saving was substantial (close to half price).
