Generating priviews
I was wondering if there is any way to turn off and stop generating "Generated 300 of 694 previews - 16 minutes left". I don't mean just closing the window. I am wondering if you can stop Capture One 21 from generating them at all.

... but if Capture One doesn't generate previews, it has no image to show you. The preview is what you see when you select and image and view it to edit it.

Hello Ian,
I also work with Photo Mechanic, and when I open a folder here the files are displayed without any delay.
I understand that Capture One has to make some sort of preview, but it can also be done faster. I am now working with a Synology Nas, and then the work process is sometimes very slow. I have many colleagues who have the same problem, so it is not new. I am also very satisfied with Capture One.0 -

Photo Mechanic displays thumbnails and previews embedded in raw files, it does NOT create thumbnails/previews from raw image data. That explains the speed. It also explains why Photo Mechanic does not display thumbnail nor preview if the raw file does not already have those embedded (some image file generating devices do not embed image blocks for display).
Some raw image applications let the user select between showing embedded previews or previews created by processing the raw data. The difference, other than speed, is that embedded previews never change*, application created previews change with user edits. This is not relevant for Photo Mechanic as it does not provide pixel data edit.
If you want Capture One to use embedded previews or let you choose between generated/embedded previews, you should file a request. If you think Capture One's program code must be made faster at generating previews, then again, file a request.
* That is not entirely true. Nikon's now obsolete Capture NX/NX2 actually replaces the embedded jpegs in the .NEF file to reflect user edits. Doing so also earned it a reputation of being slow...
Edited to add: Came to think about it, the newer Nikon Capture NX-D Studio software has an option to save metadata and I believe also an updated preview to the .NEF.
